Seasonal Visitor Services Shift Captain

Reports to: Visitor Services Manager & Assistant Manager

FLSA Status: Part-Time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt

Term: March 2024–December 2024 (pending evaluation in June)

Compensation: $17 per hour

Schedule: 20–32 hours/week, three to four shifts per week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays

Position Description:

Brooklyn Botanic Garden seeks several seasonal Visitor ServicesShift Captains for the Garden’s busy spring, summer, and fall seasons. Candidates must have customer service and cash-handling experience. Under the guidance of the Visitor Services management team, Shift Captains assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Garden’s admissions booths and related services.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide friendly, professional, and excellent service to all visitors and members.
• Maintain focus and a positive demeanor during the Garden’s busiest and slowest visitation times.
• Oversee daily operations in the Garden’s admissions booths: Manage staff breaks, assist with visitor issues, and alert management of technical or IT issues.
• Assist management team with opening and closing cash registers.
• Maintain brochures and other supplies necessary for daily operations.
• Answer phones and return calls related to Visitor Services.
• Provide support for membership enrollment.
• Assist in providing information and support to BBG’s volunteers.
• Assist with other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Previous experience in Visitor Services, customer service, or retail, especially in a garden or cultural institution
• Excellent communication skills
• Exceptional people skills, including the ability to work with diverse individuals with a variety of personalities, strengths, and goals
• Cash-handling experience
• Valid driver’s license preferred
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
