About the Pet Cancer Foundation
The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Estimates suggest that 12M dogs and cats are developing cancer every year, roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America.
We need to do more for our furry friends. To achieve this mission, we're building a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help them and their families. Our Website Editorial team requires experienced Scientific Writers with experience communicating complex scientific literature to a general (public) audience. That's where and how you can help us!
The Position:
The volunteer Scientific Writer will review credible and highly rated peer-reviewed research studies on their assigned topics and produce original articles that communicate canine and feline health and cancer information in common-language that is easily understood by the general public.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research and review applicable subject matter to inform/familiarize yourself with the topics, issues, and challenges of any writing assignment
- Evaluate source material and utilize manuscripts that are deemed to meet PCF Standards
- Draft content that accurately contextualizes the approved source material, adhering to the organization's style guide and tone of voice
- Ensure our final product is understandable for the pet owner at a high school reading level
- Contribute proposals or recommendations that may improve organizational efforts to build and maintain core website content for the pet owner.
About You
You have developed excellent skills writing content of a scientific nature while pursuing your PhD. that may have included post-doctoral work in your field. Your writing experience will include source grading and validation, along with an understanding of effective contextualization of scientific data for a lay audience. Always a team player and respective of timelines and deadlines, you have:
- Ph.D. in the life and /or animal sciences or a health-related discipline that applies to these roles
- 3-4 years experience writing and/or editing scientific-related content, including published, peer-reviewed papers
- Strong history of translating research or technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content written for specialist and non-specialist audiences
- Ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature
- Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail
- Excellent oral communication skills
