Purpose: Provides healthcare for school-aged students within an educational system.
Supervisor: Building Principal
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid State license to practice as a registered Nurse
- Experience in public health nursing preferred

- Federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to schools and medical information

Essential Functions
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of students and staff who have suffered injury or emergency illness.
- Conducts school health service, including physical examinations, immunizations, and tests for hearing and vision.
- Oversees, prepares and dispenses medication for students.
- Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care
- Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on school medical matters.
- Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
- Participates with school staff in developing and implementing total school health programs, including presenting concerns and issues in class.
- Contacts and visits the homes of students referred by the Principal or when necessary.
- Advises on modification of the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students.
- Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
- Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.
- Assists school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
- Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
- Participates in in-service training programs.
- Other duties as assigned by the building Principal.
