School Counselor - Albany, NY
Northern Rivers Family of Services is hiring a School Counselor based in Albany, NY. A School Counselor is a professional person who takes an active role in providing a comprehensive school counseling program to students with special needs. The School Counselor will spend much of their time with students individually, exploring their personal interests and abilities. Together with information gathered through testing, information files, and other records, the counselor can then work with students, teachers, parents/guardians, and other community resources to maximize the results of the student’s efforts to achieve in a school environment. For students with special needs, special education counseling is concerned with improving a student’s ability to function in social, emotional, and behavioral capacities. The counselor must be able to make sound judgments and be able to work with all the various types of students that the agency serves.
What a Special Education School Counselor can Expect:
- Will spend the majority of their time providing counseling with Special Education students individually.
- Consulting with and working with other school staff to better understand the student’s special needs and what support systems, adaptations and modifications may be necessary.
- Advocate for students with special needs in the school and in the community.
- Encourage family, guardian, and/or providers to be involved in understanding the student’s IEP and school progress. Address any questions or concerns, and inform parents and guardians of their rights.
- Collaborate with other school and community professionals, including but not limited to teachers, school psychologists, speech therapists, outside mental health counselors, psychiatrists, and occupational therapists.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to develop IEP Social / Emotional goals and to monitor the ongoing progress of the student. Identify problem areas, goals, and methods to attain goals.
- Work with referring and collateral agencies and prepare reports and correspondence as needed. Make every effort to find appropriate persons or agencies to which students may be referred when it is apparent that the needs of the student require assistance beyond the scope of the counseling service.
- Record and maintain electronic case records in accordance with the Agency, NYS Department of Education, and other state mandates.
- Provide progress updates as needed for assessments, service plan review meetings, Tier II and Tier III intervention plans, and updates for medication reviews with on-site and off-site treatment providers and psychiatrists.
- Participate in regular training provided on-site (Free CEUs Available), program meetings, and clinical services.
- Follow agency policies, procedures, and structures.
Work Schedule:
- The position is full-time; Hours are 8:00 – 4:00 pm and follow our 12-month school calendar.
Your Education and Experience:
- Masters Degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or related counseling field
- Licensure preferred, but not required
