College Success Counselor Opportunity

The College Success Counselor position provides support to Brooklyn Lab scholars and creates a college-going culture with a focus on persistence, completion and career readiness.


Support & Advising

  • Serve as a grade level advisors for scholars in all areas of college selection and monitor their progress toward high school degree completion
  • Maintain and enhance outreach through technology (social media, text messaging, virtual advising, etc.) to improve communication
  • Develop intervention plans and work with at-risk students to connect them with support staff and other resources to improve academic standing
  • Support scholars in maintaining/improving financial aid packages
  • Identify scholarship-related resources to assist scholars in scholarship application process
  • Collaborate in the planning and execution of co-curricular initiatives as assigned. These may include: matriculation events, career-readiness workshops and job shadow programs
  • Advises and provides academic counseling to all students grades 6 through 12, and assists with all aspects of our college counseling program, including financial aid
  • Works to ensure that all seniors successfully submit high quality completed college application materials on time, in order to provide them with the best opportunity of gaining admission to their best fit schools

Relationship Management & College Partnership

  • Develop and maintain key contacts at colleges and universities
  • Research establishes, and maintains long-term relationships within the college admissions arena, including, but not limited to, college admissions counselors, directors and university outreach centers
  • Attend orientations, graduations, open houses and other student functions
  • Support LAB’s 8th grade students with programming events related to high school placement and college access
  • Foster and maintain relationships with LAB staff members and external stakeholders to secure internships/jobs for college students
  • Maintains student college admissions files and records in an organized, up-to-date, and confidential manner• Assists in support and communication with school alumni as they matriculate, documents progress toward matriculation as necessary

Marketing, Research & Data

  • Consistently enter and track data using the Database
  • Maintains accurate records for transcripts and counsel the students on academic standing aligned with promotion
  • Research and stay current on higher education programs, trends and issues that impact students and make counselor recommendations based on best practices and research
  • Assist in the utilization of an effective early-alert system for at-risk students; analyze attrition and student success outcomes and take action to improve retention
  • Helps coordinate registration, supervision and other related issues regarding standardized tests administered to students, including, but not limited to, SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, and PSAT/SAT Prep course.
  • Prepare marketing, publicity materials and reports as needed
  • Uses technology and data resources to improve and streamline the college counseling process, such as Overgrad, Naviance, College Board Online and computer-based test preparation

College Success Counselor Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree in student personnel administration, counseling, higher education or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of two years experience providing direct counseling, advising, and coaching to high school students
  • Working knowledge of current retention practice theories with an emphasis on research, assessment, and data-informed decision making
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities for first-generation college students
  • Strong financial aid and scholarship support knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrated event planning and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

ABOUT THE DESIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING & MINDSET:

  • A BA/BS degree, in applicable subject; (MA degree is preferable)
  • Commitment to LAB’s mission and academic objectives: that all students, regardless of background and incoming ability, can achieve at high levels
  • Record of using data in the classroom to drive student outcomes; commitment to frequent formative assessment and student accountability
  • Demonstrated belief in a structured, predictable and safe environment for children
  • Willingness to build relationships with students, families and other school members
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to absorb feedback and engage in self-improvement; ability to reflect and adjust

ABOUT BENEFITS & COMPENSATION:


Salary range: $67,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience.
