POSITION SUMMARY:
The School Based Wellness Center (SBWC) Medical Assistant will have personal interest and/or experience in a clinical setting and will perform clinical and administrative tasks for both Pediatric and Adult patients under the direct supervision of a Nurse Practitioner. All administrative functions will be evaluated by the School Based Wellness Center Manager. The Medical Assistant will be evaluated by the School Based Wellness Center Manager in collaboration with the supervising Nurse Practitioner for their respective centers.
As a member of the health center's integrated care team, the Medical Assistant will fulfill the following KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES towards the provision of patient-centered, coordinated patient care:
- Take vital signs using clinical protocols. Interview or triage patient for complaint or reason for coming to the center. Record data in the medical record. Perform tests as indicated by protocol.
- Escort patients to exam room and prepare them for examination when necessary.
- Assist clinician with examination when appropriate.
- Reinforce clinician's instructions to the patient when related to the problem or issues, such as wound care, use of inhalers, crutches, labs, diet, etc., encouraging patient to ask questions if concerned.
- Perform procedures as ordered by the clinician.
- Call and schedule all patient referrals.
- Attend and participate in (1) health fairs, (2) meetings with SBWC members and public/private health and human service and education partners, (3) at school community advisory group and/or Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sessions to collaborate, consult, plan, or evaluate opportunities and (4) health promotion and prevention activities.
- Use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations.
- Establish and maintain an effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers, and the public.
- Perform cleaning specifications of various medical equipment, fixtures, utensils and related materials.
- Perform outreach calls to patients and/or specialty offices as requested.
- Ability to work on-site is an essential duty for this position.
REQUIRED SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Computer and data entry skills are a must.
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred.
- Ability to speak and write English fluently. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- This position may require travel between CCI sites to provide additional coverage when needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and have successfully completed and graduated from a Medical Assistant program with a minimum of two years of experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Current CPR certification.
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR), computer and data entry skills are a must.
- Ability to speak and write English fluently.
- Perform standard tasks associated with patient care with minimal oversight from the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Proper and professional grooming is always expected.
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending or working at a desk on a computer.
- The ability to lift (up to 15lbs) is required.
- Work under stressful conditions within a controlled enclosed environment daily. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
