This role will lead the efforts to implement and sustain day to day safety programs and continuous improvement of a safety culture in a regional setting.
The Safety Specialist provides technical and professional support services to operations and reports directly to the Safety Director.
This position requires a full time / on-site presence within the region of support.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES

• Assist the employees and management of the site in the enforcement of the safety programs and ensure state and federal OSHA compliance in the field and reduce the risk of employee injury
• Coordinate hazardous tasks and functions on site to ensure they are performed safely in accordance with company safety programs and procedures and OSHA standards
• Sustain safe operations by conducting site visits/inspections of facilities, work areas and equipment; observing and documentation employee work practices and improving safety preparedness
• Identify corrective actions necessary to bring job sites into compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and explain these measures to others
• Inspect the availability, readiness and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first aid supplies
• Recommend and follow up to verify the implementation of corrective actions
• Identify and recommend safety equipment, material and supplies for work operations
• Assist HR in reporting and investigating workers compensation and general liability claims on job sites; act as a liaison with HR and workers compensation issues
• Investigates reported near misses and employee injuries
• Conduct and/or assist with job hazard analysis
• Develop and update required safety training in accordance with the approved safety programs
• New Staff orientation training
• Instructor led training
• Train and certify operators for PIT, MEWP, Bridge Crane, etc.
• Track training and injury reporting
• Maintain and track hazardous waste storage and removal
• Ability to research and appropriately apply OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, EPA standards
• Oversees Emergency Response Team training and operations

You're required to have this

• Requires a minimum of a BA/BS degree in occupational safety, fire science, engineering, emergency management, public safety or a related discipline
• 3 to 5 years prior experience with full time direct safety operations role
• Detailed understanding of general industry standards and knowledge of basic health and safety concepts such as hazard & risk assessment and machine / equipment safety etc.
• Experience with Industrial Hygiene
• Sound, Comprehensive knowledge of occupational health, and safety regulations
• Ability to handle multiple priorities and make decisions under pressure and in an environment of change
• Outstanding communication / people skills
• The ability to organize and conduct trainings and chair meetings on short notice
• The ability to provide leadership, mentoring and positive influence regarding safety culture
• Understanding and experience with servant leadership roles and customer service
