Food Safety Specialist - Sustainability/Food Donation
We are looking for someone within the Washington, DC, or Maryland market. There is up to 85% travel within our division. A Food Safety Specialist- Donation is responsible for coordinating and managing the collection, storage, and distribution of food donations. Duties include establishing relationships with donors, ensuring Food Safety standards, overseeing logistics, and collaborating with community organizations to address food insecurity. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, managing volunteers, and implementing strategies to optimize donation processes. Strong communication and organizational skills are crucial to facilitate efficient food donation operations. Additionally, this position assists in the collection and analytics of data as directed by the Director of Food Safety.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Must Completely Comprehend Albertsons Donation Program
  • Drive participation in the stores by increasing the number of departments participating in the process and growing pickups from 2 times a week to more.
  • Maximize what is already shrink into donations for our partners while reducing waste and helping the environment.
  • Walk the departments and look for evidence of unsold food that could have been donated.
  • Examine places where donations are stored in Refrigeration Boxes and Freezers.
  • Work with store employees to improve donations and donation processes.
  • Check for store employees understanding of the food donation program.
  • Monitor progress in focus stores.
  • Report findings to Food Safety Director and District Management making suggestions for improvement both in the district and in the store.
  • Report suggestions for improvement to store directors and follow up to determine if progress is being made.
  • Check donation collection areas in coolers, freezers, and Receiving Area for proper storage, labeling, etc.
  • Monitor store donations on Retail Cockpit.
  • Provide Weekly and Period Reporting to drive results.
  • Ensure division office has a signed indemnity agreement with food bank partners servicing the store.
  • Instruct new associates on proper use of Handheld when scanning items for donation.
  • Review audit results with key store personnel and provides assistance to correct deficient conditions.
  • Communicate inspection results to the Legal Department and/or division management for follow-up and support.
  • Monitor and assist stores to comply with local, state, and federal Food Safety and health standards, including personal hygiene and hand washing, temperature control of potentially hazardous foods, cross contamination control, pest control and chemical use training.
  • Participate in division staff meetings, store director and department meetings, and career advancement program training meetings.
  • Introduce and administer individual store, district and division Food Safety and sanitation incentive programs.
  • Review Food Safety- Donation results with Dir Safety, District Managers and provide assistance to correct deficient conditions. Recommend to District Manager corrective actions requiring management approval.
  • Recommend action steps to Store Management teams at Safety and Food Safety opportunity stores.
  • Maintain channels of communication, encouraging store and division personnel to express new.
  • Other activities identified by Dir Safety and District Managers to include surveys, special projects, reports investigations and training classes.

Qualifications:
  • Requires travel throughout the division.
  • Requires excellent knowledge of excel and word.
  • Degree in public health, environmental health, food science, or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to tolerate working in the cold.

Experience Level:
  • 12 years' experience or education in food handling, sanitation, or public health preferred
  • Must obtain all professional licensure required by local law or regulation.
  • Familiarity with grocery retail experience preferred.
  • Previous training and auditing experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Federal Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) preferred Skills and Experiences:
  • Must possess ability to motivate others to achieve desired results.
  • Deal effectively with a wide variety of people on a daily basis.
  • Strong analytical skills required for data interpretation and analysis.
  • Computer skills in word-processing and spread sheet software preferred.
  • Possess excellent communication skills, including oral and written, plus the ability to speak effectively before groups.
  • Must be able to interface effectively with a wide variety of personnel. Possess ability to communicate concepts, systems, procedures, etc., in a training environment.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work may be performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Must sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
  • May spend long periods of time at a desk or computer terminal.
  • May use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties.
  • Workdays are fast paced; some evening and weekend work may be required.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 85%+ of time is spent traveling.
