The Solid Waste Division (SWD) of King County's Department of Natural Resources and Parks has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic Safety Professional as our Safety Officer! This is a great opportunity to apply your subject matter expertise in writing or editing policies and procedures, providing coaching or training, and applying codes and regulations to address hazards.
This position will also be crucial in creating a comprehensive, up-to-date Accident Prevention Program that is integrated into the culture of the division. What You Will be Doing:
- Plan, develop, implement, and monitor division-wide Safety Programs and projects.
- Provide health and safety technical support to all levels of staff to achieve and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Safety training recommendation, development, coordination, and delivery.
- Incident investigation and review, including safety committee coordination and recommending corrective actions.
- Development and ongoing implementation, training, and maintenance of safety management system.
- At least three (3) years of occupational safety and health experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job or the equivalent combination of knowledge and experience:
- Demonstrated experience in the following:
- Safety rules and regulations
- Industrial hygiene hazard exposure control
- Creating and maintaining safety performance metrics
- Incident investigation, analysis, reporting and corrective action identification and implementation
- Corrective action identification and implementation
- Health and safety professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHST, OHST)
- 40-Hour Hazwoper Training
- Applied Technology Council (ATC) 20
- Incident Command Systems (ICS) 100 or higher-level certifications
- Courage in stepping up to address difficult issues and saying what needs to be said.

Work Schedule: This regular, full-time position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provisions and is not overtime eligible. The workweek is normally Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required to support events and community meetings.
