This position is being recruited in Palmer and Fairbanks; the final location will be based on the selected candidate's location.

Bi-weekly Starting Salary

Palmer - $2446.50
Fairbanks - $2520.00

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) is hiring a Safety Officer. Under direct supervision, this position reviews, evaluates, and monitors compliance with required safety and health regulations for the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection with an emphasis on wildland fire, aviation safety, and mission-related support operations.
Mission and Culture
The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection’s mission is to safely manage wildland fires that pose a threat to life, property, and critical infrastructure on 150 million acres of land throughout the State of Alaska. The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection works closely with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies to provide wildland fire management and protection for the State of Alaska.
This position is part of a high-functioning team that supports the “boots on the ground” to provide for the safety of people, property, and Alaskan resources. Under its multifaceted functions, this position's primary goal is to communicate and reduce the risk for our employees and emergency responders. This position works within a team to solve diverse challenges and contribute to the success of the DOF mission. We are looking for an enthusiastic, dependable problem solver to join our team.
Core Responsibilities
  • Ensure the fire program includes risk management at the strategic level in our planning and preparing for wildland fire responses. Develop, organize, and conduct seminars, workshops, and training sessions on safety with a focus on the major risk influencers of our mission.
  • Design and implement special emphasis on emerging safety awareness issues.
  • Produce annual reports on the agency's statistics regarding equipment damage, accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
  • Receive, review, and investigate OSHA agency reports of violation. Represent the agency at OSHA contest hearings.
  • Review and process accident/injury reports pertaining to job-related injuries.
  • Review accident investigations for proper corrective or preventive actions and recommend solutions for controlling accidents and injuries.
  • Perform industrial safety and hygiene evaluations related to noise, ventilation, chemicals, and stress-related tasks. Design protection devices and reduce hazards.
  • Conduct inspections of safety practices and facilities compliance; identify unsafe practices; and establish strategies for suitable corrective measures to manage the risk of accident and injury loss in accordance with State and other appropriate codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Identify toxic and hazardous materials, maintain safety data, and provide training regarding usage, storage, and control of these materials.
  • Perform annual fire extinguisher inspections; establish a record system to identify the location and maintenance schedule for all worksite fire extinguishers; and refill, charge, and install fire extinguishers as required.

Our ideal applicant should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral methods to a diverse audience. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and instructional materials.
  • Knowledge of best principles and practices of employee and public safety in the emergency response field including, accident investigation, risk mitigations, and communicating strategy to partners, fire managers, cooperators, and the public.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, precedents, and terminology used in the wildland fire, emergency response, aviation, safety and employee health fields.
  • Ability to collect, compile, and analyze data and present conclusions and recommendations.
  • Ability to develop, organize, and present safety training and apply teaching techniques.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions, analyze and exercise judgment in handling the most complex problems. Ability to think clearly and act quickly during emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Compliance: Knowledge of procedures for assessing, evaluating, and monitoring programs or projects for compliance with Federal laws, regulations, and guidance.
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Safety Hazards: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to identify, control, mitigate, and eliminate safety hazards in the design and use of facilities, equipment, operations, and work processes.

And at least one of the following emphasis areas

  • Industrial Equipment Operation: Knowledge of principles and methods for operating industrial equipment.
  • Fire Management: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of fire management, including the characteristics, behavior, and ecology of fire; methodologies, strategies, and equipment used in prescribed fires; fire detection, prevention, and suppression strategies; and integration of fire with natural resource management.
  • Health Physics: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods pertaining to the protection of people, their environment, and equipment from hazards (for example, radiation or hazardous chemicals) and the control of radioactive material.
  • Mine Safety and Health: Knowledge of mine safety and health principles and practices, techniques and procedures, regulations, and standards as they apply to conducting inspections/investigations, identifying and evaluating unsafe conditions, and recommending methods to correct unsafe conditions.

equivalent to those typically gained by:

experience with occupational safety and health programs which includes the application of occupational safety and health-related regulations, codes, and standards; and involvement with workplace safety and health consultations, inspections, and/or investigations.

  • This position may travel during the fire season (April 1 - August 31 or later) for up to 14-21 days at a time within Alaska to assist area offices with fire. As well as attend meetings or trainings.
  • May work towards qualification for other positions utilized in the Incident Command System.
  • May work or be available during evenings and/or weekends, depending on the need during the fire season.
