DESCRIPTION
THE DEPARTMENTThe Human Resources Department provides the full range of human resources supports services to 22 departments throughout the City. HR's services include labor relations, employee relations, benefits, training, salary and classification administration, HRIS administration, oversight of personnel investigations, EEO compliance, occupational health services, risk management, and safety compliance. THE POSITION
The Department of Human Resources currently has an opening for an Senior Administrative Intern position or a Management Intern under the Safety Bureau. This position report to the Safety Officer and provide safety guidance and support to the Public Works Department.
Under general supervision, the position will assist in developing, implementing, and administering a comprehensive safety management program for the Public Works department; conduct field audits, develop training presentations, and job safety analyses; to ensure compliance with Cal-OSHA regulations.
This is an unclassified, non-career position. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. This is an at-will, temporary, part-time position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Assists in the developing, implementing, coordinating, and administering of a comprehensive health and safety management program for the City, including industrial safety, and occupational health, to ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations for employee occupational health and safety.
  • Regulatory review of applicable Cal-OSHA safety orders and developing code of safe work practices, job hazard analysis and training presentations.
  • Conducts safety inspections of City facilities and operations to identify safety and occupational health hazards.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
  • Senior Administrative Intern - Must be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in a junior or senior standing or enrolled in graduate-level courses in the fields of in occupational health studies, environmental studies, industrial health, safety management, safety technology, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Those who have graduated within one year of application submission will also be considered.
  • Management Intern - Must be enrolled in a master's degree program from an accredited college or university with six (6) months of paid experience or volunteer work in the fields of occupational health studies, environmental studies, industrial health, safety management, safety technology, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Those who have graduated within one year of application submission will also be considered.
  • Copies (official/unofficial) of transcripts and degrees/diplomas must be included in the application package.

  • A valid driver's license

Experience:
  • Six (6) months of paid experience or comparable paid/unpaid volunteer experience are required for the Management Intern level position in addition to the educational requirements.

No experience is required for the Senior Administrative Intern level positions.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong work ethics and attendance record;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain professional work relationships;
  • Interest in learning about Safety;
  • Proficient in the use of PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, and other online applications;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Quick to adapt to new situations;
  • Available to work a minimum of 16 hours per week during regular M-F, 8 am-5 pm work schedule. Preferable M, W, and F (24 hrs) or T and TH (16 hrs).

These positions do not participate in the hybrid work schedule as they provide internal services along with the other staff in the Safety Bureau.
