JOB SUMMARY:
The Rig Manager is the overall supervisor of the rig and coordinates the work of the crews on each rig and the work of any additional crewmen or technicians who may be assigned to them. The Rig Manager normally learns his job through on-the-job training by working up through the ranks of the basic crew. Such experience is necessary in order for him to be able to manage the operation and take over the running of the rig in emergencies or assist in times of peak load, particularly during rig-up and rig-down operations. Many have had academic training, both in accredited and industry sponsored short courses to improve their skills. They normally do not qualify, however, until they have had apprenticeship in the basic duties of each crewmember.
The Rig Manager position is expected for Winter Exploration season to start Fall of 2023 until Spring of 2024.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implements the Accident Prevention program and safe work practices.
  • Establishes emergency procedure requirements and posts them at the work site.
  • Ensures all reports and tour sheets are properly completed and promptly sent into the office.
  • Responsible for care, custody and control of all equipment and vehicles required for operation of the rig.
  • Ensures all employees have proper rig orientation, pre-job orientation, and certification, e.g., Employment Package, Operations Waste Management Procedure, Hazard locations.
  • Responsible for the moving and transportation of the service rig and equipment (trucking, cranes, cats, etc.). The Rig Manager shall also direct the erection or dismantling of the service rig at each location.
  • Assists company representative in obtaining all applicable safe work permits and their implementation, plans and schedules the delivery of materials needed for servicing, such as special tools or rig components and expendable materials, including mud, rentals, fuel, water, bits, and other supplies used. (And conveys information received through the safe work permit).
  • Directs and coordinates all well activities, in liaison with well owner or operator as necessary.
  • Responsible for communicating with company management any requests to perform work in an unsafe manner, including violation of governmental regulations or company policies. Failure to comply with this responsibility will be considered grounds for termination.
  • Assists drillers in solving operational problems and call in specialists or operating company personnel when major problems arise, i.e., severe kicks or blowouts, downhole conditions requiring plan changes, major equipment breakdowns, etc.
  • Determines and coordinates optimum servicing practices based on experience, utilization of data from nearby or similar wells, and/or optimized service programs.
  • Maintains information of rig equipment and utilizes such information to improve equipment, its usefulness, care and maintenance practices, and improve the economics of operations.
  • Documents inspections of the rig and equipment as per the IADC Service Rig Inspection Checklist. All deficiencies shall be noted, reported to the Anchorage office, and corrected in a timely fashion. Train crew members to assist with the inspection.
  • Assists in training the rig personnel in safe working practices, proper operations, and care and maintenance of the camp, rig and rental equipment.
  • Inventories all rental equipment when it arrives on location and ensure it is inventoried again when it leaves location.
  • Directly and indirectly responsible for staffing the rigs.
  • Consults with company representative and mud engineer, then communicates with the driller and derrickman to ensure proper well control fluids are maintained. This duty may be delegated to the driller and derrickman on each tour.

HSE Responsibilities
Responsible for the implementation of the accident prevention program on the rig, to the end that no worker is hurt. Functions are:
  • Ensures that only Nordic personnel operate Nordic-owned equipment and machinery.
  • Constantly checks to ensure that the safety, fire equipment and tools are up to Company standard.
  • Ensures only safe work practices are being followed and that time is being spent on training of employees.
  • Enforces Company and Government rules and regulations concerned with accident prevention and to set an example for crew members by strict personal observance of all such rules.
  • Ensures that the duties of crew members are individually understood and discharged.
  • Encourages employees to report unsafe conditions and practices and to see that prompt and proper corrective action is taken in each case.
  • Ensures that a weekly safety meeting is held at the location of his operation with each crew and reports these meetings in the daily tour and weekly safety meeting report book. The Accident Prevention & Policy Book can be used to assist in maintaining consistent policies.
  • Maintains the safety record of his rig and to strives always to improve the existing record.
  • Investigates each accident or incident on his rig with drillers and crew members concerned.
  • Report details of any accident with morning report and promptly send accident reports to the head office.
  • Cooperates with Government Inspectors and promptly notify head office of any requested corrective action and ensure corrective action is taken.
  • Ensures that the Nordic Red Hard Hat Policy is practiced and that time is taken to adequately instruct and train "green" crew members.
  • Ensures each employee has a Company Orientation Manual and reviews the Company Orientation Manual with each new employee and satisfies himself that the employee is completely aware of its contents. Each employee is to have a Company Orientation Manual (available from the office) and one copy is to be on the rig at all times.
  • Ensures that all procedures and policies are followed.
  • Performs daily walk-around of the rig and equipment each morning or shift change. Inspect all major components to ensure hazards are identified and eliminated.
  • Ensures Nordic HSET/HSE policies are practiced by all rig personnel.
  • Presents policy to all field personnel in safety meetings.
  • Ensures Nordic's annual environmental goals are distributed to rig personnel.
  • Leads internal pollution prevention program for preventing, recycling, reusing, and minimizing waste and emissions, including procedures to encourage material substitutions.
  • Assists HSE Manager in identifying non-conformances between Nordic operations and environmental requirements, including regulatory requirements, permit requirements, and contract requirements.
  • Develops and implements standard operating procedures to ensure sustained environmental compliance.
  • Develops and maintains waste management tracking system and hazardous waste determinations
  • Monitors and measures environmental aspects of HSE and compare to stated HSE objectives and targets. Takes steps to correct deficiencies.
  • Reviews and updates inventories and MSDS sheets annually.
  • Trains rig personnel in practicing Nordic policies, procedures, and waste tracking system so all responsibilities and duties are clearly understood.
  • Notifies HSE Manager and operator representative of environmental non-compliances immediately.
  • Encourages rig personnel to report any unsafe work conditions or practices and any environmental non-compliances immediately to supervisor.
  • Ensures all required environmental compliance documents are completed by personnel, with copies distributed to rig files and Anchorage office as appropriate.
  • Ensures monitoring and measurements of environmental aspects is appropriately recorded and filed.
  • Assists in any internal audits as necessary.
  • Discusses internal audit findings with Anchorage management.
  • Purchases environmentally-friendly products and supplies.
  • Investigates incidents/non-conformances.
  • Identifies and implements corrective actions.
  • Documents corrective actions per Corrective Action Procedure.
  • Forwards Corrective Action Report to HSE Manager.
  • Reviews monitoring and measurement of environmental aspects compared to stated HSE objectives and targets. Take steps to correct deficiencies.
  • Reports and discusses results annually with HSE Manager.

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
The Rig Manager is the overall supervisor of the rig and coordinates the work of the crews on each rig and the work of any additional crewmen or technicians who may be assigned to them.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Able to perform all work and communicate with others in a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment hydraulics, preventative maintenance and repairs that can be done on site.
  • Knowledge of coiled tubing capabilities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of well control and downhole hydraulics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to use calculations needed to perform essential functions.
  • Familiarity and ability to continue advancing knowledge with systems such as CTES Orion.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze problems from data and to identify root causes and provide efficient solutions.
  • Ability to safely work in an unfatigued manner at all times.
  • Ability to cope and adapt to sudden changes in surrounding or emergency situations.

Ability to follow detailed instructions and to retain and recall instructions in short term memory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least five years of Coiled Tubing Drilling experience.
  • Valid IWCF well control certification.
  • Ability to pass a drug screening, physical and background screening.
  • Valid driver's license.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Remote, industrial (noisy, wet, oily steel floor) environment frequently exposed to extreme weather conditions both on and offshore and may require work at various heights on the rig.
