The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is seeking highly motivated individuals for entry-level Revenue Auditor Trainee positions.  We seek candidates with a business-centered educational background - with a focus on accounting - and an ability to critically think, work independently, and effectively communicate both within the organization and to external stakeholders.  IDOR administers Illinois tax laws and collects taxes in a fair, consistent, and efficient manner and an auditor’s duties and responsibilities are to ensure taxpayer compliance of various tax laws.  This AUDITOR TRAINEE position can include a variety of roles, from conducting field examinations to supporting functions of the audit process.

Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.  As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (“OEIG”) or may be subject to a fine.

Job Responsibilities
  • Under immediate supervision, for a period not to exceed twelve (12) months, receives intensive scheduled classroom instruction and on-the-job training involving the various facets of the Illinois Department of Revenue’s (IDOR) Audit program and operations.
  • Participates as part of a team in audit assignments, or assists supervisor, to whom assigned, in more difficult or complex audits.
  • Attends and participates in a formalized classroom training program on regularly scheduled basis to receive highly specialized and technical orientation, indoctrination and instruction in the knowledge and skill required in both manual and computerized revenue tax auditing.
  • Receives on-the-job training in performing auditing assignments of increasing difficulty, in either an in-house setting or in a field office.
  • Receives classroom and on-the-job training in utilization of a Personal Computer and related software, e.g., Access, Excel, Word, etc.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports detailing results and conclusions of assignments including supportive documents and evidence.
  • Provides routine tax information and guidance to taxpayers concerning the proper method of completing tax returns and application forms.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires possession of a bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or finance. Requires a minimum of 21 semester hours of progressive coursework in accounting.

           -OR-

           Requires possession of a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 15 hours of progressive coursework in accounting, including one class in tax or auditing, and either (a) or (b):

           (a) Five years of work experience performing technical accounting and/or auditing functions; OR

           (b) Five years of work experience in the Revenue Tax Specialist Series (specifically, one year as a Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee, three years as a Revenue Tax Specialist 1 and one year as a Revenue Tax Specialist 2).

 

This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.

Conditions of Employment
  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires ability to travel extensively and frequently, often keeping irregular hours.
  • Requires possession of a valid driver's license and access to an automobile.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds including transporting a personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to reach above shoulder level to top shelves to remove tax related documents.
