Job Classification Title: Life Science Technician I

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The anticipated shift is based on the operational needs and can change at any time with notice:

Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm with a one hour lunch break.

The expected pay range for this position is $29.78 (Step 1) to $35.90 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy, within the Stanford Department of Medicine, is seeking to hire a Life Science Technician I (LST). The LST will be responsible to proactively communicate with Clinical Research Coordinators for ongoing clinical trials to procure clinical specimens (primarily whole blood) from study participants, process it following protocols s/he will be trained on, and biobank/cryopreserve components (serum, immune cells) isolated thereby. The LST will maintain diligent electronic and hard copy record of samples received, processed, and components biobanked. The supervisor will communicate with LST on daily basis, and have biweekly meetings to ensure that (i) the workflow and SOPs are being accurately followed, (ii) any concerns are promptly addressed, (iii) LST is aware of the priorities set by the larger team.

The LST will be trained by and report to the supervisor/ Senior Research Scientist. In addition, the LST will interact with clinical research coordinators for ongoing clinical trials, the Director of CIT program, and more broadly- the CIT team, Meyer lab, and research collaborators.

The LST will not be responsible to plan/ schedule/assign/oversee work done by others. However, the LST is expected to be a good team member demonstrating ideal laboratory practices and demeanor.

The candidate should have Bachelor level theoretical knowledge of immunological principles. All the necessary training regarding specific protocols will be provided by the supervisor. Experience handling human blood, tissues, and performing flow cytometry will be a plus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience handling human blood, tissues, and performing flow cytometry.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • B.S. in Biology or equivalent Life Science-related field.
  • One year’s employment experience in laboratory work or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience/training (e.g., one year of college science).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records.
  • The candidate should be able to drive to a Stanford Clinical site within Stanford-Redwood City and Stanford-Palo Alto areas to pick up clinical specimens as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
