Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

The Workflow and Ecosystem Services group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Research Scientist who can drive advancements in Federated Learning and privacy-preserving techniques within large-scale distributed systems ecosystems across the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum. We are looking for a self-motivated researcher with a growth mindset who will harness state-of-the-art decentralized techniques and distributed programming models to ensure data privacy and system efficiency across leadership-class modern computing and data platforms. Prior experience with Federated Learning and HPC is required. To be successful in this role, you must be team-oriented and demonstrate a drive for self-learning. Our team has a diverse skill set and are natural problem solvers who share a passion about supporting scientists and enabling new discoveries for humanity, while working on some of the most exciting problems with ground breaking technologies. This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division at ORNL. NCCS has a deep legacy in High Performance Computing (HPC) operating leadership-class systems, deploying the world’s first exascale system (Frontier) and largest parallel file system.

Our Team:

Our mission is to empower scientists to succeed by building and delivering tools, infrastructure, processes, and standard methodologies for organizing their data and workflows, and making them universally accessible, understandable, findable, shareable, and reproducible. We are a creative and dynamic group of research and technical professionals who have a passion for workflow and software services enabling science across domains.

Our Organization:

This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division. The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments. The NCCS provides an innovative computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of fields. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities. NCCS has deployed the U.S.’s first Exascale system. As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an outstanding 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are essential for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Drive and lead research and development initiatives in Federated Learning, focusing on the implementation and optimization of privacy-preserving techniques within large-scale distributed systems.
  • Develop and deploy distributed programming models, ensuring the integration of fault-tolerant techniques for optimal system resilience and practical use in the user facility.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum, ensuring our R&D is aligned with emerging technologies. Drive projects related to secure network slicing and the consistent deployment of software-defined network updates.
  • Lead collaborations and projects focused on the privacy-preserving computation of distributed data, particularly in the realms of Federated Learning and entity resolution. Ensure the adoption of best-in-class multi-party computation tools for privacy-preserving AI/ML computations.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Engage with teams across ORNL.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in computer science or a related discipline, and at least seven years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD.
  • An established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.
  • Prior experience with Federated Learning and HPC is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in distributed programming models and fault-tolerant algorithms.
  • Profound understanding of privacy-preserving computation of distributed data for Federated Learning and multi-party computation tools for privacy-preserving AI/ML computations.
  • Experience with scalable and consistent programming for stateful distributed applications.
  • Knowledge of shared memory concurrency for multicore architectures, including design, implementation, and verification of shared memory techniques.
  • Expertise in fintech ecosystem scalability and security, encompassing blockchain protocols, payment-channel networks security, and state-machine replication.
  • Foundation in distributed computing techniques related to edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum.
  • Demonstrated experience leading R&D projects.
  • Ability to learn new technologies.
  • Resourcefulness, troubleshooting aptitude and attention to detail.
