Title: Senior Research Scientist
Unit: Center for Native Peoples and the Environment
Salary: $75,250 annually, full time, excellent benefits
Location: SUNY ESF Campus.
The Department of Environmental Biology is home to the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment (CNPE) www.esf.edu/nativepeoples . The CNPE faculty, staff and students are engaged in education, research, and outreach to prepare the next generation of scholars and practitioners to engage with Indigenous ecological knowledge and worldview, in partnership with scientific tools, in service to ecological and cultural flourishing. Located in the territory of the Onondaga Nation, the center of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment has a decades-long history of productive collaboration with Indigenous partners. Undergraduates may pursue a minor in Native Peoples and the Environment and ESF is a member of the Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership.
Responsibilities include:
The CNPE is seeking a doctoral level candidate to enhance capacity in environmental sciences for CNPE programs, partnerships, outreach. Responsibilities include:
  • Work with State and Federal agencies, non-profit partners, academic faculty, students & staff and Indigenous Nations on behalf of CNPE goals and objectives;
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, analyze scientific inventories & studies in collaboration with staff and faculty, e.g. as requested by Indigenous Nations;
  • Provide technical expertise regarding management plans, policies, applications, and other material relating to care of ancestral homelands;
  • Develop ecological frameworks for land justice efforts, working with CNPE staff and partners;
  • Supervise students and others conducting research and other projects supporting CNPE;
  • Advise students in selection & implementation of graduate student projects and other facets of degree completion;
  • Assist in development of cultural provisioning networks in support of Indigenous sovereignty, e.g. on public, academic, and NGO lands;
  • Teach classes as needed; participate in Campus activities, organizations as appropriate;
  • Conduct historical ecology and other cross-cultural environmental research; publish said research;
  • Provide outreach to Native, academic, and other communities as appropriate;
  • Attend and present at professional conferences and gatherings as appropriate;
  • Participate in CNPE meetings, events, and outreach as needed.

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph. D in historical ecology, natural history, natural resources, environmental science, forestry, biology, ecology, geography, geographic information systems, or related field.
  • Course work or field experience in one or more of the following areas: historical ecology, community ecology, wetland systems, botany, plant ecology, soils, hydrology, and zoology or wildlife management.
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings
  • Experience in integration of Indigenous and western environmental science
  • Experience supervising others in field work assignments.
  • Experience with ArcMap or related computer mapping products.
  • Experience with handheld GPS and field data collection devices
  • Experience with design & teaching of college level classes as well as informal education.
  • Experience working with, advising graduate students.
  • Experience working in partnership with State agencies, local NGOs and community groups.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with field sampling methods, collecting and processing biological/environmental data;
  • Familiarity with aerial photography and field navigation using aerial and topographic maps.
  • Knowledge of regional fauna and flora, natural communities, ecosystems, ecosystem processes, watershed hydrology and soils
  • Familiarity with taxonomic keys and field guides.
  • Experience with Trimble GPS units and related software
