Position Summary

The Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL) at the Public Health institute (PHI) designs, catalyzes, and accelerates innovative approaches that advance health, well-being, and equity. Under the direction of PHIL’s Director of MERLIN: Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Innovations, the Research Assistant II is responsible for supporting PHIL research and evaluation projects. Major activities include data collection, preparation, and processing; participant outreach and recruitment; and research support across PHIL projects.

This is a remote time-limited full-time position with a regular schedule of 40 hours/week. This position is expected to last through July 31, 2024. Applicants must be equipped to work from home with reliable internet and computer access.

Full pay range for this position: $19.30 to $26.30 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is from $19.30 (minimum) to $22.80 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Research Assistant II will be responsible for supporting diverse aspects of PHIL research and evaluation projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collect secondary population health and demographic data from existing, publicly-available data sources such as County Health Rankings, American Community Survey, etc.
  • Prepare quantitative and qualitative data for analysis, including information collected via interviews, focus groups, and surveys. Transcribe interview and focus group recordings using Otter.ai, with additional quality checking as needed.
  • Process documents, including capturing key pieces of information from various records such as meeting minutes, group charters, and annual reports.
  • Assist with other research tasks, as needed. Additional tasks may be assigned based on project need and Research Assistant interest, learning objectives, past experience, and/or demonstrated abilities, including:
    • Assist with primary data collection, such as conducting interviews.
    • Assist with data analysis, including quantitative analysis (descriptive and inferential), qualitative (content analysis and process tracing), and/or network analysis.
    • Assist with reporting, including data visualization, writing report sections, and/or preparing supplementary content for inclusion in reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of research and/or administrative experience.
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent).

Other Qualifications

  • Experience collecting, cleaning, and managing data (quantitative and qualitative) preferred.
  • Strong time management skills and an ability to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed.
  • A high level of PC literacy, including a broad knowledge of Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Critical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Strong attention to detail skills and an ability to work with minimal errors.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with team members.
  • Ability to progress on several projects concurrently.
  • Understanding of research and evaluation concepts and approaches.
  • Experience working with local and/or state public health agencies is preferred.
  • Proficiency in a second language other than English, such as Spanish, is preferred.
