Form of workThe Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MTLS) and the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech, NMT) invite applications for a joint Faculty/Research Scientist appointment. The faculty position, supported at a level of 50% for a 9-month academic year, is a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The Research Scientist position, supported at a level of 50% during the academic year and full-time during the summer, is supported by EMRTC and is focused on energetic materials and/or dynamic response of materials. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications aligned with the details in NMT’s Policy and Procedure for Appointment, Promotion & Tenure. The preferred start date is the Spring 2025 semester (a 2025 Fall Semester start is also acceptable).
The MTLS undergraduate program is ABET accredited, offering a BS degree in Materials Engineering and options in Metallurgical Engineering and Polymer Science. The graduate program offers MS, ME and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering. MTLS has 7 tenured and several adjunct faculty conducting research in metallic alloys, functional ceramics and coatings, nano-materials, sustainable polymers, energetics and additive manufacturing, providing an outstanding hands-on educational environment for students. MTLS has several unique processing capabilities, and state-of-the-art characterization laboratories for teaching and research. EMRTC has unparalleled capability for R&D in energetic materials, including dozens of test ranges, gas guns, sled tracks, and ordinance professionals. Opportunities to develop strong collaborations with nearby Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories exist.
NMT is a STEM-focused, public research institution with an enrollment of approximately 1700 undergraduate and graduate students. Students at all levels participate in research. Per NSF, NMT is the top public institution in the US and 18th overall (https://ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf22321) in the fraction of baccalaureate recipients going on to earn
a PhD. NMT is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution, and roughly 1/3 of our faculty and students are female.
[1] A PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or closely related field, preferably with at least one degree (BS, MS or PhD) in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering.
[2] An ability to work collaboratively in a research center environment.
[3] An ability to establish an independent, externally funded research program supporting graduate and undergraduate students.
[4] An ability to develop and teach undergraduate courses and laboratories in Materials and graduate courses in the applicant’s area of expertise. Courses in materials thermodynamics, transport, dynamic behavior, and computation are of particular interest.
[5] An ability to support student academic success by engaging and encouraging students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
[6] A commitment to professional and academic excellence.
[7] Based on the research opportunities at EMRTC, US citizenship or permanent resident status is preferred, however; Foreign Nationals may be considered.
