The Opportunity and Who You’ll Work With:

Position Type: Permanent, Full Time, Benefits Eligible

Work Format: Hybrid, minimum of 2 days onsite, with a maximum of 3 days remote.

Schedule: Monday – Friday. Hours are typically 09:00AM-05:00PM ET.

WBUR's newsroom covers local news in Greater Boston and Massachusetts. The business team includes two reporters, reporting to the managing editor. The team covers local business news and the economy with a focus on technology, innovation and equity.

We are looking for an ambitious reporter with a nose for business. If you love explaining the trends that shape our economy – and our wallets, exploring how technology is transforming workplaces, and going behind the scenes at companies in Greater Boston and beyond, this position is for you. You’ll dig into the region’s vibrant innovation sector, as well as real estate, restaurants, equity issues and more. You'll work in a dynamic newsroom with colleagues who value great reporting and storytelling, and like to have fun too. We need a reporter who can develop sources, break news and take plenty of deeper dives.

Three years of journalism experience is required, and broadcast reporting experience is a plus. Proficiency in a second language is a big plus. This is a multi-platform position, so you’ll be filing for digital, radio and social media.

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum salary is $74,492.00 and can go up based on experience and internal equity.

Essential Functions:

  • (50%) Produce radio and digital content for newscasts and feature stories with an emphasis on business, innovation and the economy, including but not limited to: writing, researching, gathering material. Independently judge stories for appropriateness and publication.
  • (20%) Conduct interviews with sources, including but not limited to: developing sources, interviewing with sources, identifying and profiling innovative people, enterprises and startups; using transcription programs. Completely execute multimedia stories for digital publication and radio.
  • (15%) Develop story ideas, projects and sources with an emphasis on innovation and business by following business news, community leaders, attending events and tracking ongoing regional business issues. Read many regional newspapers and journals.
  • (10%) Engage WBUR audiences online, at live events and on social media through Facebook and other social networks.
  • (5%) Participate in new initiatives, projects and series as assigned by the Managing Editor or Executive Editor.

Required Skills

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent/relevant experience
  • 3 years of experience in journalism
  • Broadcast reporting experience is a plus

Capabilities and Proficiencies:

  • An excitement about WBUR’s mission to provide an essential public good: high-quality journalism and enriching experiences that foster understanding, connection and community.
  • A commitment to ethical editorial practices, including accuracy, fairness, respect, honesty and independence on-air, online, on-demand and on stage. (for more, see WBUR’s ethics guidelines).
  • Demonstrated writing ability and ability to develop sources.
  • Broadcast reporting experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with broadcast recording equipment and editing software is also a plus.
  • Familiarity with digital reporting and AP style preferred.
  • Proficiency in a second language is a big plus.
  • Proficiency with social media and a willingness to try out new platforms is a plus.
