We have strong relationships with NPR and regional collaborations like Harvest Public Media, Side Effects Public Media and the Midwest Newsroom. We serve our local communities while elevating our reporting for national audiences. And every four years, we have a front row seat for the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.
About the positionWe are looking for a journalist with great news judgement, a strong sense of curiosity, and a passion for all forms of the arts to be our Arts & Culture Reporter. You’ll join a great team in this brand new role, and will work closely with our award-winning digital, reporting, and music staff. Our teams work with NPR regularly, and our reporters’ stories are regularly featured on NPR.org and the NPR news magazines.

The Arts & Culture Reporter, in collaboration with the Digital Manager, is responsible for growing and serving IPR’s arts-enthused audience through original reporting and product development, which may include an original newsletter and/or podcast. The Arts & Culture Reporter collaborates across IPR’s music and news/talk teams in collecting and developing Arts and Culture/lifestyle stories, and is responsible for pitching and filing original reporting and features, which will be used digitally and on-air, as designated. The Arts & Culture Reporter is responsible for developing a personality and presence across selected emerging digital platforms in order to build the impact of their reported stories. Taking direction from the Digital Manager, the Arts & Culture Reporter is also responsible for cultivating, assigning, and editing IPR’s independent arts & culture contributors.
The beat for this reporter is broad: it covers the entire state of Iowa, and it covers the full umbrella of Arts and cultural news, happenings, and commemorations that may be occurring or available at any given moment. In this way, this position is an Arts & Culture general assignment role, though development of more regular content around particular areas within this beat is possible, in consultation with the Digital Manager.
Comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, life, LTD, retirement plan, immediate accrual of vacation (16 hours monthly) and sick (12 hours monthly) time
The Basics- FLSA Classification: Exempt (Salaried, paid once a month)
- Reports to: Digital Manager
- Pay range: Based on experience, $40,000 - $55,803
- Location: 2111 Grand Ave, Des Moines IA 50312. Candidates must be able to appear in the Des Moines office and studio when required. This beat covers the state of Iowa. In-state travel (<20%) is required. Remote work is authorized when appropriate.
- This position requires a current state-issued driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- At least three years of experience in a professional journalism environment, including internships.
- Strong broadcast and print writing skills.
- Experience working in multimedia platforms, including audio, photography, video and web platforms.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or other related field.
- Two or more years’ experience in Arts and Culture reporting.
- Experience building a personality and presence on at least one social media platform.
- Experience assigning or/and editing the work of other reporters and producers.
