Job description

Bring your heart to CVS Health. Every one of us at CVS Health shares a single, clear purpose: Bringing our heart to every moment of your health. This purpose guides our commitment to deliver enhanced human-centric health care for a rapidly changing world. Anchored in our brand — with heart at its center — our purpose sends a personal message that how we deliver our services is just as important as what we deliver.
Our Heart At Work Behaviors™ support this purpose. We want everyone who works at CVS Health to feel empowered by the role they play in transforming our culture and accelerating our ability to innovate and deliver solutions to make health care more personal, convenient and affordable.

Position Summary

The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a leader on the Agile Release Train (ART), a team of teams (50-125 people) that plan, commit, develop and deploy software together to deliver significant value to CVS’s end customers.

This is an instrumental leadership role in the oversight and execution of CVS initiatives that generates multimillion-dollar business value to the organization and touchs millions of consumers every year, partnering closely with leaders from other disciplines (Product, Engineering, QA, Architecture, Design/UX) and across the organization to provide quarterly guidance and day-to-day direction.

RTEs are accountable for relentless train improvement and for ensuring transparency about the ART’s delivery, risks and accomplishments. The RTE drives train processes and ensure teams have everything they need to be successful to build the product and help coach the ART in Scrum, Kanban and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years working with Lean- Agile methodologies
  • 2-5 years’ direct experience as an RTE
  • Advanced understanding of lean-agile principles/mindset and SAFe principles/core values

  • Excellent communication (written, oral, presentations), holistic view and systems thinker
  • Able to lead without “Command and Control” style (servant leadership), empathetic
  • Proactive, problem-solving approach – someone who offers solutions not problems for others to solve. Comfortable jumping in as needed to support the Train
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills/collaborative style and the ability to establish strong working relationships and influence peers and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate large planning and solutioning sessions
  • Understanding of Agile at scale philosophies & methodologies. Experience working in an Agile organization using Scrum, XP, Kanban, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), or other scaling models
  • Synthesize data from multiple sources and use that information to develop insights on train’s status
  • Willing to try new things, check and see if they worked, and then change and adapt
  • Experience using Agile best practices, i.e., burn-down charts, different retrospective formats, defect management, user stories, ATDD, TDD, BDD, CI/CD, automated testing, etc.
  • Ability to travel for onsite PI Planning when required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scrum Master experience with teams working on complex large-scale applications
  • Experience with Agile collaboration tools such as CA Rally, Confluence, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Miro, etc.
