Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) plays a crucial role in providing high-quality, specialized care to critically ill patients. The ICU RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care within the Intensive Care setting. This position requires advanced clinical knowledge and skills to manage complex medical conditions and emergencies.
Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Monitoring:
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' health status.
- Monitor and interpret vital signs, laboratory values, and other relevant data.
- Continuously assess and reassess patients' condition, responding promptly to changes.
Treatment Planning and Implementation:
- Develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient assessments.
- Administer medications, treatments, and procedures as prescribed.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and interventions.
- Manage and operate specialized equipment used in the ICU.
Critical Care Nursing:
- Provide advanced nursing care for critically ill patients, including those with respiratory failure, sepsis, and other life-threatening conditions.
- Monitor and manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
- Administer and titrate vasoactive medications as necessary.
- Respond to medical emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions.
Patient and Family Education:
- Educate patients and their families about the patient's condition, treatment plan, and post-discharge care.
- Provide emotional support and address concerns and questions.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members, including physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and others.
- Communicate effectively with team members and maintain accurate and timely documentation.
Quality Improvement and Safety:
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and promote a safe and healing environment.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
- Current RN license in the state of practice.
Experience:
- Prior experience in critical care or ICU nursing is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are usually required.
Skills:
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
Certifications:
- ACLS certification is typically required.
- Additional certifications such as Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) may be preferred.
Working Conditions:
The ICU RN may work in rotating shifts, including nights and weekends. The position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects, and work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
