POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Vice President of Youth Development, and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the Ann Arbor YMCA, the Regional Director of Youth Development will lead the association strategy, execution and expansion of Youth and teen programs. This includes management, direction and supervision of out-of-school-time youth and teen programs, including but not limited to, afterschool, weekend, and summer programs, including day camps across Washtenaw County and potentially Southern Livingston County. Included in the responsibilities are staff recruitment, training and supervision, fiscal management and development of programs for youth ages 5-18, including programs currently operating and creation/expansion of new revenue generating programs through collaboration with community partners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Development and Management:
  1. Develops and directs high quality engagement strategies and programs which support the association goals and strategies. Establishes plans for the expansion of programs and services, in harmony with overall YMCA objectives and the leadership team.
  2. Evaluates the scope and quality of services offered by the Association, assesses community needs and ascertains the gaps between offerings and needs.
  3. Directs and supports the design, delivery and evaluates summer day camp and year-round programs to meet the needs and interests of the target populations and ensure the delivery in a safe and quality manner.
  4. Directs the development and delivery of Youth healthy out-of-school-time programming in Washtenaw County and potentially Southern Livingston County including, but not limited to: Day Camps including In-Building Camps, Specialty Camps, Ypsilanti Day Camps, Teen Camps/Specialty Camps, Camp Birkett; afterschool and weekend programs including but not limited to YIG, YVC, YAC, teen specialty programs.
  5. Ensures a program culture that promotes the YMCA's mission, vision and core values. Provides direction for all day camp programming elements of all sites to ensure the development of an inclusive and welcoming culture that fosters a sense of belonging for program participants and staff. Responsible for the supervision and direction of weekly day camp field trips, check in/out, bus transportation, and all related duties. Supervises the logistical components of day camp programming at all program sites. Ensures development of age-appropriate weekly themes and activities that allow youth to develop skills, build confidence, make independent choices throughout the day and feel connected to the Y community. Ensures Developmental Assets Framework and Diversity, Inclusion and Global are integrated into all programs.
  6. Serves as the leader of the Day Camp Leadership Team to deliver equitable experiences for youth across Washtenaw County and potentially Southern Livingston County. Complete all Leadership Team responsibilities, including but not limited to marketing and development of promotional literature, hiring, training, scheduling, participant engagement opportunities and staff recognition.
  7. Integrates HEPA standards into out-of-school-time programs ensuring youth receive opportunities to be physically active for 60 minutes each day (30 minutes for half day or afterschool) and that standards for healthy eating are met within programs.
  8. Develop relationships with members to provide pathways for involvement in programs. Plan and conduct special events and year-round opportunities for program participants and their families, and staff.
  9. Be an advocate for the Y's cause through regular communication with program participants; provide educational materials for families on healthy living and oversee member engagement opportunities in youth healthy out-of-school-time programming.
  10. Responsible for recruiting diverse campers through marketing, community engagement, and actively contacting prospective customers; responsible for registration, including management of registration platform; Prepare and analyze enrollment trends. Develops year-round program brochures/marketing materials and all related releases as necessary. Update and maintain all program web pages as needed.
  11. Ensures all aspects of customer service are high quality as it relates to youth and teen programs including training of front-line staff, communication with the Membership Welcome Center and addressing all inquiries and complaints in a timely and thorough manner.

Decision Making/Risk Management and Safety:
  1. Keeps the safety of children and staff as the highest priority; know how to recognize suspected Child Abuse and Neglect and reporting procedures, as required by the State of Michigan and the Ann Arbor YMCA.
  2. Support the mission, vision and goals of the Ann Arbor YMCA; promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  3. Use abilities such as attention to details, multitasking, and strong oral, auditory, and written communication skills to interact with adults and children daily.
  4. Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws as well as ACA accreditation standards. Work to acquire ACA accreditation and then maintain criteria required for ACA accreditation and state licensing. Maintain record keeping for camper and staff files per ACA, state requirements and YMCA policies.
  5. Work with parents and guardians by phone, online or in-person, to ensure their comfort with programs and program staff. Primary administrative responsibility for program participant disciplinary action, including parental communication.
  6. Demonstrate sound judgement when dealing with daily operations in a variety of situations and with people of all socioeconomic levels.

Volunteer/Staff Development
  1. Develops strategies to ensure staff and volunteers reflect the community.
  2. Responsible for submitting payroll for day camp & program staff.
  3. Directs staff hiring, camper/program enrollment and program management requirements.
  4. Supports the supervision and professional development for seasonal and year-round staff and volunteers, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, training, supervising and evaluation of all staff and volunteers; ensures human resource management practices are followed. Ensures staff acquire and maintain all relevant certifications and licenses, including CPR and First Aid.
  5. Fosters a learning environment embracing diverse abilities and approaches.
  6. Provides collaborative leadership and guidance to peers through association-wide leadership meetings, direct one-on-one best practice sharing with peers both in and outside the facility.
  7. Develops and monitors staff development plans and training opportunities that promote career growth within the Y.

Collaboration
  1. Builds and nurtures strategic relationships with like-minded organizations to enhance support for the Y.
  2. Develops positive working and collaborative relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.
  3. Serves as a community leader building collaborations based on trust and credibility to advance the Y's mission and goals.
  4. Provides tools and resources for the development of others, implements a comprehensive staffing plan, designs development plans for direct reports, and builds trust among team members.
  5. Works collaboratively with other departments to develop new programming opportunities, leveraging existing relationships and program service sites to expand YMCA service area across Washtenaw County and potentially Southern Livingston County. Develop and enhance community relationships with parents, school administrators and community partners.

Facility Management:
  1. Responsible for meeting health codes and maintaining camp licensing standards for State licensing, including but not limited to, maintaining a hygienic, safe space for program participants, managing cleaning schedules, and daily upkeep of the program space, equipment and supplies of camp programs.
  2. Works collaboratively with the facility department for Camp Birkett maintenance and opening and closing of the facility.
  3. Ensures oversight for off-season maintenance through site visits, including but not limited to preventative maintenance, construction check-ins and weather-related issues.
  4. Develops capital needs assessment and works with the Chief Financial Officer with management on building projects. Assist with collection, evaluation and recommendation of bids for maintenance projects.

Fiscal Management:
  1. With guidance from the Vice President of Youth Development, develop and manage the budget for day camps and youth and teen programs. Develop capital needs assessment and prepare funding options. Monitor all financial record keeping, receipting and billing procedures. Responsible for handling of petty cash/credit cards during summer and seasonal programs.
  2. Responsible for ordering and inventorying all necessary program supplies and equipment. Monitor equipment needs and liaise with vendors as required.
  3. Assist the Financial Assistance Coordinator in the allocation and oversight of the financial assistance program as it relates to Traditional In-Building, Specialty Camps, other out-of-school-time activities, and community outreach programs.
  4. Responsible for providing metrics and information related to community youth programming to grantors and partners, including but not limited to: MDHHS, MHEF, Altarum Institute and the State Alliance of YMCA's.
  5. Provide fee increase recommendations. Investigate trends in finances according to monthly and annual reports. Constantly Review and complete program analysis for responsible fiscal control.

General:
  1. Supports the mission, vision, and goals of the Ann Arbor YMCA; promotes character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Reinforces Y values within the organization and community.
  2. Acts as a member of management team; assists with general membership facility supervision.
  3. Uses abilities such as: attention to detail, multitasking, and strong oral, auditory, and written communication skills to interact with adults and children daily.
  4. Model positive adult-to-child and adult-to-adult interactions and fosters an atmosphere of respect for children and adults.
  5. Must work closely with other departments to ensure good communication, cooperation and ensure good customer service throughout Y facilities and programs.
  6. Attend trainings and conferences as assigned.
  7. Actively participate in the financial development plan of building a culture of philanthropy in the association including involvement with the Annual Campaign.
  8. Other projects/duties as assigned and needed in the Association. This is job description not intended to be all-inclusive. It is understood that the employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties if requested by the supervisor.
  9. Exemplify a commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout the Association, across programs, and at all administrative levels.
  10. Attend scheduled staff meetings.
  11. Reads all YMCA communications including but not limited to email daily.

Requirements
  • Minimum age 21 (Michigan licensing requirement), 25 or older preferred (ACA non-mandatory standard).
  • Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Recreation, Elementary Education, Environmental Studies, Social Services or related field, or its equivalent in work experience is required. Master's degree in education or social work is an advantage.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience in a day camp or similar setting and an understanding of the mission and philosophy of the YMCA. Experience with oversight of multiple sites preferred.
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader and Global Leader Certification preferred or ability to obtain Multi-Team Leader and Global Leader Certifications within 2 years.
  • Understanding of American Camp Association, State of Michigan licensing for children's camps and State Environmental Health requirements is preferred.
  • Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, fiscal management, and life spans of programs is critical.
  • Director must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, supervisory skills, budgeting skills and initiative in program development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team is necessary.
  • The director works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to learn and use YMCA specific software within 30 days of employment. Must be capable of using basic Microsoft Office software.
  • Certifications in CPR & First Aid are required within 60 days of employment. Lifeguard certification preferred. CPR & First Aid, Lifeguard Trainer preferred. Ability to acquire HEPA trainer certification with 12 months is required.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification strongly preferred. Certification in CPR and First Aid are required within 60 days of employment.
  • Must have a Chauffer's License or willingness to obtain a Chauffer's License.
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as a willingness to learn, second language is a plus.
  • Understanding of YMCA mission and cause is required. An ability to demonstrate YMCA cause within program setting is an advantage.
  • Job requires travel within Washtenaw County and potentially Southern Livingston County, 25% to evaluate, oversee and expand existing and new markets within our service area.
  • Successful completion of DHS criteria. Including finger printing, physical examination, including a TB test required within 30 days of beginning work.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  1. Has a flexible schedule between the working hours of 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Monday through Friday, with some weekend and evening hours required.
  2. Ability to work more than a 40-hour week with irregular work hours during summer camp season.
  3. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  4. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  5. Must be able to assist a small to average size child weighing up to 50 pounds.
