Position Title:Recreation Program Coordinator
Organization Unit: Park & Rec
Reports to: Park & recreation Manager
Status: Full-time, Non-Bargaining Unit
Hours: M-F, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Posting Period: until filled.

Summary: Working under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Manager, the Recreation Program Coordinator plans, promotes, implements, coordinates and supervises the daily activities of the City of Chester Parks & Recreation Department, including special events, recreation activities, camps, pools, senior activities, classes and facility usage; supervises the work of Recreation Program staff; schedules a variety of Recreation Programs and facilities; and performs of other work as assigned.
Position Qualifications
Minimum Education and licensing requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies or a related field from a four-year accredited college or university is preferred, but will consider experience in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in professional Recreation Programs or event management with one year of lead or supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid PA Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
- Must be able to obtain Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Certification upon hire.
- Recreation and Aquatic certifications (CPRP/CPRE, CPO/AFO, CPSI) a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities (For Performance Appraisal)
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Plan, organize and implement Recreation Programs by overseeing a variety of sports and Recreation Programs, ordering supplies and collecting registrations.
- May coordinate recreation operations for a specific program, facility or park to include developing and implementing appropriate activities for participants, marketing and media relations.
- Work with various vendors, sponsors, contractors on various programs and events.
- Work independently and be responsible for overseeing programs at designated locations such as parks, community centers, pools, school facilities, and other public facilities. Includes setting up and taking down at facilities and areas for special events, including weekends, holidays and evenings.
- Prioritize job tasks and complete them within specified time frames meeting deadlines.
- Prepare written documents, statistical reports, work orders, time sheets, schedules, press releases, brochures, program rosters, social media posts, etc.
- Collects activity and registration records and prepares program plans and requirements in advance for budgetary recommendations; prepares reports describing and evaluating programs at completion of activity and identifies methods and areas to improve.
- Maintains supplies, equipment, and materials in support of athletic and Recreation Programs.
- Monitors the condition of recreation facilities, courts, ballfields, and other facilities; documents and reports needed maintenance and repairs.
- Performs necessary manual labor and skilled tasks that may require lifting heavy objects, stooping, bending, and twisting.
- Books facility rentals; attend to facility users’ needs, including permits and equipment; ensures that all set ups are done, manage program budget.
- Assists with the coordination of parks and facilities maintenance requirements and capital improvement programing.
- Enforces policies, procedures and rules for staff, instructors, volunteers, vendors, and contracted facility renters, as well as enforcement of safety and operating procedures and provides for maintenance needs, including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes.
- Communicates and works with individuals, community groups, committees, and citizens to stimulate interest and develop Recreation Program support, including fundraising.
- Attends monthly board meetings and assist in the preparation of meeting reports, agendas, and minutes.
- Monitors recreation industry trends and practices to help develop fresh programs and events to engage diverse populations within the Township.
- Administers regular customer service surveys to obtain feedback on programs and special events.
- Assists with the development and management of the department’s budget.
- Maintains records related to recreational programming and events.
- Assists with staffing, scheduling, interviewing, hiring, training, and providing performance feedback for all seasonal and part time staff.
- Assists with the oversight of summer camps, pools, and other Recreation Programs.
- Directs staff to resolve conflicts and facilitate cooperation.
- Plans activities that provide a safe and comfortable environment for all program participants.
- Assists in communicating with parents regarding behavior of minor participants.
- Assists in running and supervising programming.
- Attends meetings and serves on temporary committees, as requested.
- Interacts with parents, children, program participants, instructors, coaches, youth associations, community organizations, arts organizations, civic groups and others regarding programs, events and activities.
- Responds to complaints regarding programs, fees and refund policies, and other concerns.
- Assists in grant preparation and acquiring sponsorships and donations.
- Assists with the development and updating of department policies and procedures.
- All other duties, as assigned.
