Position:Railroad Claims Specialist
Reports to: Manager Shop Administration
Department: Fleet Operations
Business Unit: Union Tank Car Co. Leasing
REQUIREMENT: Hybrid Chicago or Oakville, Ontario-based position ... Hybrid combination of WFH with in-corporate office as required.
Summary: This position is responsible for securing recovery of repair costs from railroads for damage to UTLX owned equipment that is involved in railroad accidents. The candidate would be the key liaison between the company, repair shops and the railroads for ensuring the recovery of railroad damage claims. They would have total responsibility from the Railinc Damage and Defective Car Tracking (DDCT) incident notification through counter billing invoice issuance.
Primary responsibilities and essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for counter billing damaging lines more than $10 million per year.
- Owns the Railinc DDCT incident process and is the key point of contact for railroad damage resolution.
- Notifies Regional Sales Offices of incident so that lessee is notified, and shopping event is initiated.
- Works to secure flatcars and cranes as necessary for heavily damaged equipment when involved in lessee plant.
- Works with Repair Business Scheduling department to secure shop space for railroad damaged equipment and provides damaging line with equipment disposition in DDCT.
- Provides Depreciated Value (DV) and settlement acceptance in DDCT if requested by damaging line.
- Responsible for working with repair shops and damaging line to secure Joint Inspection Card (JIC) endorsements.
- Works with repair shops to extract Railroad responsible repairs from Billing Repair Card (BRC) per regulatory standards.
- Creates 500-byte file and provides to third-party vendor for audit, corrects as needed.
- Processes railroad repair invoices through third-party vendor system.
- Reconciles monthly vendor billing summaries for month end Railroad Claims ledger analysis.
- Fully documents railroad damage process from incident through claims billing.
- Tracks trends and holds training sessions with repair shop write up network.
- Participates in special projects, prepares, and distributes dashboards reflecting key process indicators as needed by upper management as assigned.
- Assign damaged and bad ordered cars to shop.
SKILLS / SPECIFICATIONS:
- In-depth knowledge of AAR billing rules and regulations.
- Demonstrates clear and professional written/verbal communication skills.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Solid problem-solving skills and creative approach for generating new ideas.
- Promotes a team effort by working together to accomplish desired results.
- Strong individual contributor with task completion skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience within the railroad industry.
- Chicago based role currently with a Hybrid work schedule.
