The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Central Region is looking for a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) for its Renewable Energy Program. Challenge yourself and gain valuable skills working for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in the Central Region (Region 4) of California. In this exciting position you will be a part of California's history. As California's Renewable Energy projects expand and newer projects enter the planning and permitting phases, there is a need to balance economic success and potential impacts to sensitive fish and wildlife resources in our state. The Region 4 Renewable Energy Program is tasked with analyzing potential impacts of industrial-scale Renewable Energy projects, developing avoidance and minimization measures, and driving creative mitigation for impacts in compliance with CESA, CEQA, and F&G Code. Duties include working on sensitive scientific investigations for projects involving Renewable Energy development and other complex projects in the 12 counties of the Central Region. Specified activities require knowledge of California fish and wildlife resources, ecological principles, water resources management, lake and stream processes, permitting and environmental laws, and administrative procedures and policies. The candidate will apply knowledge of environmental resources, the diverse habitats of the Central Region, ecology, and State environmental laws. The successful candidate will require a high degree of personal initiative and independent judgment while working with our team within Region 4. Working Conditions
The position requires the use of a computer for the majority of the hours of each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations, participation in meetings, and occasional overnight travel. The position may also require field work and surveys during the early mornings or late nights, hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain, use of 4-wheel drive vehicle (including all-terrain vehicle), and work in inclement weather. A valid California driver license is required to drive to meetings and field sites. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as Department staff. This position would be primarily based in either Fresno County or San Luis Obispo County and is eligible for hybrid telework at either location. Hybrid telework will be dependent on operational need and this position will be required to report to the Fresno office in the City of Fresno or the San Luis Obispo Field office in the City of San Luis Obispo at least once per week and six times per month. Please note that an office-based schedule is not an available option in San Luis Obispo County.
