Function
The purpose of the class is to serve as the group leader for the crew of service and repair technicians for the designated shop. Performs and leads the crew in complex repair and maintenance to include state inspections. Supervises and coordinates the activities of the maintenance team and directs the flow of repair and service on a variety of vehicles and equipment. The class works under general supervision, according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks. Assists management in the planning and directing of maintenance, repair processes and tasks. Day shift reports directly to the Operations Manager and Night shift reports directly to the Superintendent.
Minimum Requirements

• Requires successful graduation from high school or completion of a GED.
• Must have vocational, technical, or trade school training in Automotive Mechanics or Repair.
  
• Five (5) years of experience in a fleet service operation working on equipment for the assigned shop with two (2) years of Team Lead or supervisory experience.
• A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A (Heavy Off-Road and Fire Shops) or have the ability to obtain within 90-days of employment.
• Must be a Certified as a Motor Vehicle Inspector, licensed by the State of Virginia, or the ability to pass the requirements to obtain license within 90-days.
• Must obtain and maintain ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in two (2) content areas for the shop assigned within one (1) year of employment
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• Must possess a complete set of automotive mechanic tools at all times while in this position.
• The incumbent is considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.

This position will work the following shift (subject to change due to business need):
3pm-11:30pm, Tuesday-Friday
8am-4:30pm, Saturday
