The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The Public Relations (PR) Manager is one of the key multimedia storytellers for the zoo. As the Public Relations Manager, responsibilities include fostering communication between the zoo and various media outlets, including traditional and social media, by designing creative content to be used for promotion. This necessitates that the applicant has excellent written and oral communication skills, photo and video editing skills, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external persons of interest to the zoo.
As a Public Relations Manager, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Develop and implement media relations and PR strategies to enhance the zoo's brand image and consumer perception. This includes communicating events and zoo announcements to the media, writing press releases and media advisories, and hosting media events.
- Pitch events and zoo announcements to the media
- Write press releases, media advisories and statements
- Maintain media contact list
- Host PR visits in the zoo and offsite
- Responsible for multimedia coverage for ribbon cuttings and press events
- Storytelling ability through written and visual means is necessary; therefore, capturing appropriate content and editing as needed is essential to the job.
- Produce content for zoo marketing
- Storytelling ability through photo and video
- Edit content using Adobe Premier, Photoshop and other editing software
- Coordinates zoo subject matter experts for interviews, speaking engagements, creating PowerPoint/Keynote presentations and talking points.
- Draft copy that maintains brand consistency to be used in external communications such as websites, newsletters, social media and print.
- Manage the social media team, supporting their efforts in promoting the zoo. This includes monitoring the social scheduling platform, managing the priority and timing of initiatives, coordinating content and copy execution and growing each platform as a strong storytelling tool.
- Constantly exhibit an attitude of service inside and outside the zoo, showing hospitality to all.
- Be fully committed to the mission of San Antonio Zoo to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wild world we steward and the animals we protect.
- Any other duties as assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- 4+ years of professional experience, 2 of those years specifically in managing (preferably managing the execution of multiple projects and campaigns with varying deadlines across multimedia platforms).
- BA in Marketing, Journalism, Communication, Business, Photojournalism, or equivalent work experience.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must have experience in using Meta, X, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads
- Skills, knowledge, and understanding of marketing and branding principles, Public Relations, research and planning techniques.
- Be an organized, collaborative and energetic individual, empowering cross-functional teams to achieve shared business goals.
- Time management skills that allow the ability to manage complex projects end-to-end and thrive in a fast-paced, independent environment.
- Expert familiarity with video, digital photography and editing.
- Proficient in using Adobe Premiere or equivalent video editing platforms.
- Provide guest-driven strategic thinking while being operationally focused to drive execution.
- Strong analytical aptitude and communication skills
- Have a passion for live events and bring creative ideas on how to reach our audiences more innovatively.
- Awareness of crisis management.
