Job description

Essential Job Functions: The Senior Public Relations Manager will play a vital role in shaping and maintaining the City's image and reputation to the public and media. The Senior Public Relations Manager will develop and implement PR strategies, manage crisis communications, create compelling content, plan media events, and build relationships with media, influencers, stakeholders, and citizens; work closely with the executive leadership team and cross-functional departments, identifying opportunities for media relations, content creation, and event planning. Through regular stakeholder engagement and proactive media outreach, continually enhance the brand message and communications, effectively speaking to the media and addressing questions on a variety of complex topics for a variety of the City departments; responsible for assisting with the strategy and execution in crisis of all shapes and sizes (from water issues to hurricanes), which can require being on call 24/7. Develop communication plans, monitor and respond to issues, and provide guidance to the executive leadership team in assistance with the Emergency Operations Center depending on the severity of the issue; work as a liaison between all City departments and administration to find and pitch stories that help control the narrative and the right channels or partners; responsible for creating compelling content and messaging for internal and external audiences which includes: writing press releases, talking points, speeches, pitches, and other communications materials and graphics. Responds to citizen concerns, questions, and comments via social media or otherwise as a community manager and face of the City. Plan and execute events that support the City's initiatives and programs such as press conferences and groundbreaking ceremonies.

This position is considered essential during emergency situations. Works inside in an open office environment; must be available to work 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, extended hours, weekend and holidays when necessary; travel may be required.

Knowledge: Knowledge in office practices and procedures, equipment, and software, including Microsoft Office, Canva and other software applications (Adobe programs preferred); knowledge of photography and graphic design; knowledge of database management; knowledge of all current social media platforms. Strong knowledge and existing relationships with local media outlets, including broadcast, print, radio and digital.

Skills/Abilities: Excellent written and verbal communication skills that balances accuracy with need for speed of response; skilled in the use of personal computers, printers, software and other office equipment; telephone etiquette; must possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and organizational skills; detail oriented with ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; experience managing deadlines and production schedule; excellent proof-reading skills; a collaborative spirit and ability to engage colleagues and leadership. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines and personalities and comfortable liaising with senior City staff and elected officials.

Physical Requirements: Constantly sees and hears; frequently types, sits, stands, sorts, stores, twists body, writes by hand, operates PC, carries and lifts objects weighing up to 40 lbs.; infrequently operates a calculator, kneels, crawls, climbs.

Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or related field required; Master's Degree in Communications, Education or a related field. A minimum five (5) years of work experience in a Public Relations or Journalism role. Bilingual in Spanish highly desired.
