The Office of the Chief Investment Officer of the Regents of the University of California (UC Investments) manages $168 billion of endowment, retirement, and working capital assets under the policies, guidelines, and performance benchmarks established by the UC Board of Regents. POSITION SUMMARY
The hire for this role will professionally manage the passively managed Public Equity asset class to meet specified investment goals for the benefit of the Institution. This position provides oversight and management of the Public Equity class by creating and monitoring relationships with existing managers, evaluating, and selecting new external passive and ETF managers and creating risk and investment guidelines for investment managers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
50% - Portfolio Construction and Monitoring of the Passive Public Equity Portfolio
Assist in recommending portfolio construction for the passive Public Equity portfolio.
  • Spearhead the recommendation, selection, and monitoring of passive equity strategies, including passive implementation of thematic strategies, through ETFs and other means.
  • Create new passive investment strategies with external partners, improving portfolio's risk/return at low cost. Conduct independent research and analysis in the due diligence process to identify and monitor thematic trends.
  • Monitor Public Equity markets and identify industry trends and market intelligence and communicate the findings of such insights.
  • Conduct research and analysis within the due diligence process to identify, evaluate, negotiate, and monitor the performance of the Public Equity asset class.
    25% - Risk Management
  • Assist in recommending strategy to manage risk factors across the equity portfolio (regions, sectors, foreign exchange, growth vs value, small/mid/large cap, and other equity risk premia).

  • Monitor the risk and equity risk factor exposures in Public Equities on a regular basis with the team.
  • Work with Public Equity team and the broader UC Investments to leverage and transfer knowledge base of strategic external relationships that inform tactical and risk decisions.
    15% - Other Duties as Assigned
  • Provide research and analytical support, as needed.
  • Lead projects and assignments, as requested. These projects may include, but are not limited to, providing performance attribution, creating presentation materials, providing project management and drafting memos and letters.
  • Provide additional support to the broader organization and other asset classes.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining operations of investment strategies across all of the Public Equity portfolios. Assure that all aspects of each portfolio are in compliance with the investment policies and guidelines as approved by the Board of Regents, as well as standards required by the Chief Investment Officer.
  • In partnership with the operations team, develop and oversee the data integrity / monitoring / reporting / transparency process and system for Public Equities.
    10% - Quantitative Research
  • Implement and develop quantitative models and perform quantitative/statistical research in stock selection, portfolio construction and risk modeling of equity portfolios.
  • Help oversee quantitative analysis of the Public Equity portfolio including separation of alpha and systematic risk factor attribution.

  • Regularly lead and conduct investment research on the capital markets, particularly in the equity markets.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    Experience
    5 years' experience in the investment Management industry, particularly in Public Equity.
    Education
  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree and/or CFA preferred.
    Travel
    Ability to travel up to 25%.
    SPECIAL CONDITIONS
    This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, but the selected candidate will be required to work onsite in Oakland, CA at least three days a week. The successful candidate also needs to be a current resident of California or if not, be willing to relocate.
    SALARY AND BENEFITS
    Pay scale: $215,000 - $240,000 per year
    Full Salary Range: 155,000 - 324,000 per year
