Public Affairs & Communications Intern
The New York Building Congress is one of the premier civic leadership groups in New York City. Responsible for convening a diverse membership drawn from all sectors working in the design, construction, and real estate industries, the Building Congress places a strong emphasis on research and advocacy on behalf of its membership.
This Building Congress Internship offers the participant a unique opportunity to develop effective Public Affairs and Communications skills. The intern will work for, and alongside, a team focused on policy research, government relations, and internal and external communications for the New York City building industry. The intern will, among other tasks, be asked to manage the organization’s social media and two weekly newsletters under the supervision of the Communications Director. The intern will also assist in drafting testimony, policy statements, and other press-related materials, as well as assist in data collection and management for policy reports, as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and compose two weekly newsletters (Mondays and Fridays)
- Follow organizational protocols for social media posting; schedule posts as needed
- Assist the Public Affairs team with day-to-day activities, including writing and editing statements and press materials
- Research information relevant to media inquiries
- Attend press conferences and other events
Interested applicants should:
- Be creative and detail oriented
- Be interested in local, state, and federal advocacy, particularly around housing, transportation, and infrastructure
- Be eager to learn about the relationship between advocacy and the media
- Have excellent writing skills
- Have experience with handling most social media platforms (with a focus on LinkedIn).
Experience with Mailchimp and newsletter composition is required. Familiarity with Trello is a plus.
