How you Will Power our Purpose (Job Summary)
Join our Project Safe Swim team as an instructor and be a key player in delivering essential safety, aquatics, and fitness education to pre-k, kinder, and first graders in collaboration with the Greater Austin YMCA and Colin's Hope. This multifaceted curriculum includes both swim and dry-land lessons, empowering children and caregivers with life-saving knowledge about water safety.Your commitment is critical in educating kids and caregivers about essential water safety practices.
As a Project Safe Swim Instructor, your hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with occasional Friday shifts. Don't miss the opportunity to shape the water safety skills and confidence of our future champions. Join the Project SAFE team today!
How You Will Make an Impact (Essential Functions)
  • Protect the health, safety, and welfare of all persons in the pool area.
  • Follow personal attire requirements, including wearing appropriate swim attire.
  • Know, understand, obey, and enforce all rules and policies of the YMCA equally.
  • Teach Project SAFE classes as assigned by the program director.
  • Know and follow the YMCA of Austin's Human Resources Guidelines, Code of Ethics, payroll procedures (including completing timesheets), and established emergency procedures.
  • Arrive on deck at least 15 minutes prior to class and be ready to start class at the scheduled time.
  • Travel between YMCA sites, with their own transportation.
  • Secure your own substitute if you cannot make a scheduled class, and provide lesson plans for substitutes.
  • Know and abide by YMCA Aquatic Program levels, objectives, and philosophy.
  • Know lesson plans; keep records and reports on classes, including completing an evaluation of participants, class rosters, attendance tracking, and registration procedures.
  • Understand and carry out YMCA Progressive Swimming Program Objectives, specifically the Safety Around Water Curriculum for Project SAFE.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate, refers members and participants to other programs.
  • Attend all required meetings and/or trainings.
  • Never turn your back or leave the class or pool area while teaching unless another certified instructor can take over. If no others are available, you must remove the swimmers from the pool.
  • Instruct class participants to take a soap shower before entering the pool.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the area; remove items and equipment when finished or those that need attention all needed repairs to your supervisor.
  • Follow pool lockup procedures if your class is not followed by another activity. If your class is followed by another group, remain on duty until you are relieved.
  • Render first aid as needed and complete incident/accident report form for every injury/altercation on the premises.
  • Actively and enthusiastically support the Branch and Association goals and directions through effective completion of tasks and verbal display to peers, staff, members, and guests.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

What You Bring to the Community Enterprise
  • 18 years of age
  • Intermediate aquatic skills, including knowledge of swim strokes and lifeguard responsibilities.
  • 1-2 years of previous Swim Instructor experience.
  • Current First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certifications are preferred.
  • You quickly learn from failure and value feedback in an effort to continuously improve.
  • You are a team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude, and you can work well with others.
  • You listen for understanding and meaning. You speak and write effectively.
  • You build good customer relationships and deliver customer-centric solutions.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, talk and occasionally lift and/or move items including equipment and children. Must be able to remain alert, sit or stand for extended periods of time, hear noises and distinguish distress signals, scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, perform all physical tasks related to instructing and observing participants in proper stroke techniques, communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
