Your role at GEI.

GEI’s Ithaca, NY office is seeking a mid-level Environmental Engineer or environmentally focused Geotechnical Engineeror Geologist. Under supervision of senior staff, this individual will provide support to ongoing field and office-related efforts. Field activities may include: drilling of soil borings and installation of groundwater monitoring wells; collection of groundwater, sediment, soil, soil vapor and air samples; operation of air monitoring equipment; testing to evaluate groundwater aquifer characteristics; and remedial construction oversight and management. Office tasks include: task/project planning and management; client, subcontractor and agency interaction; review and interpretation of data; preparation of work plans and reports; development of investigation and remedial strategies; evaluation of remedial technologies; and remedial design.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate field tasks.
  • Conduct environmental site assessments, including soil borings, monitoring well installation, and environmental sampling.
  • Provide technical oversight to subcontractors, including documenting construction activities and reviewing project specifications.
  • Manage subcontractors.
  • Check data and review documents for completeness.
  • Draft correspondence and reports, including Site Investigation work plans/reports, feasibility studies, permit applications, and soil management documents.
  • Adhere to project scopes and budgets.
  • Task management activities including budget preparation and tracking, staffing and scheduling, and interaction with subcontractors, clients and regulatory agency representatives.
  • This position has a field component; travel and some overnight travel are required. Candidates should be prepared to work in inclement conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology or related field, M.S. a plus.
  • 3-5 years of previous professional experience in environmental consulting.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s license.
  • Excellent computer skills with technical analysis software, MS Office, and other computer applications. Experience with MS Project, PowerPoint, CAD and/or GIS software a plus.
  • Excellent technical report writing and communication skills are required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on short-term assignments as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field tasks at any time of the year.
