The Youth Leadership Institute (yli) builds communities where young people and their adult allies come together to create positive community change that promotes social justice and racial equity. For over 30 years the Youth Leadership Institute has sparked the leadership of young people to solve pressing social issues and serve our communities. yli's community-based programs are located in San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo, Madera, Merced, Fresno, Long Beach, and Coachella. In addition to serving eight California counties, yli provides customized trainings, consulting, evaluation, and technical assistance services nationally.
yli is committed to engaging and developing young people of color, low-income youth, and other non-traditional youth as researchers, advocates, and agents of social change. With support from yli staff and through authentic partnerships with other key adult allies, young people build the skills necessary to research the issues that most affect them and their communities, develop campaigns to advocate for change, and partner with local stakeholders to implement these changes in their respective communities.
Job Summary
The Program Coordinator (PC) position is a key role at yli, responsible for ensuring the LA Tobacco Coalition Team is supported in programmatic deliverable implementation and assisting in the preparation, editing, and finalizing of Long Beach documentation. This work includes facilitating youth development, partnership with government agencies and driving youth-led action research activities.
The PC is expected to be an empowering and creative change agent, with an appetite for learning, coupled with an ability to operate as part of a team with internal staff and external partners. They should be familiar with a variety of administrative functions, digital drives & cloud services, and contract support. The Program Coordinator supports program work and capacity-building concepts and practices in the fields of youth development, human-centered design, social justice, and racial justice. In addition, they rely on extensive experience and judgment to accomplish goals and support the work of others on their team.
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment, Outreach & Promotion (15%)
Recruit diverse youth to lead campaigns:
- Conduct ongoing outreach to attract and retain a dynamic and diverse team of youth leaders, consistent with yli's anti-racism commitments.
- Produce outreach materials, including social media content.
- Represent yli by participating in local coalitions.
Program Operations & Logistical Functions (35%)
Run high-impact programs (usually up to 2-3 programs engaging up to 25 youth weekly, or equivalent complexity of programming):
- Customize and deliver innovative curriculum that builds youth skills related to leadership, research, storytelling, and advocacy.
- Plan and arrange meetings and events, preparing sites, agendas, and materials, and ensuring adequate meeting follow-up.
- Maintain accurate, current program records, and collect program evaluations, to support the program and meet funder reporting requirements.
Campaign Management (30%)
Develop and manage high-impact policy and/or storytelling campaigns:
- Utilizing a youth-led action research model, develop the capacity of youth and adults to facilitate youth-led community-level data gathering and analysis in support of campaign actions. Utilizing a youth-led storytelling model, develop the capacity of youth and adults to facilitate youth-led media projects in support of campaign actions and/or community awareness.
- Employ social media tools to organize local youth.
- Manage the coordination of key campaign events, like rallies, assemblies, press conferences, decision maker interviews, external communications, and/or legislative hearings as needed; attend and/or cover City Council meetings & County Board of Supervisor meetings as needed.
- Secure and/or amplify campaign support from key stakeholders, including school administrators, teachers, parents, community members, policymakers, and other youth groups.
- Maintain a database of allies, constituents, and opponents.
High-Quality Relationships & Mentoring (10%)
Support youth development and build community relationships:
- Maintain consistent contact with youth and adult participants, and strengthen peer-to-peer and youth-adult relationships.
- Utilize positive youth development and youth-adult partnership principles to guide the work.
- Develop and oversee internship programs, supervising and mentoring youth.
- Develop relationships with local leaders and decision-makers.
Organizational Leadership (10%)
Contribute to yli's organizational mission and goals:
- Actively participate in yli committees, meetings and activities, including organizational anti-racism work.
- Stay informed about local issues, trends and opportunities in the field, sharing relevant issues and opportunities with colleagues.
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
- BA degree and/or 2-3 years of relevant experience in community-related work, including youth development, public policy, and community organizing
- Knowledge of client management systems and procedures
- Computer literate in Mac platform and Google suite (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets), and the capacity to quickly learn new technology.
- Experience working with clients
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask
