Spread the Word Nevada Overview

Spread the Word Nevada was formed in February 2001 by Co-Founders, Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst.


Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the homes of children within Nevada's at-risk, low-income communities. Through community collaboration, mentorship, and family partnership programs, Spread the Word Nevada fosters reading and language development opportunities, ultimately leading to brighter academic and economic futures for these children. We are dedicated to changing the lives of at-risk children, one book at a time.


Spread the Word Nevada has various programs that support, coordinate, and facilitate the mission to advance childhood literacy. Programs include the Kids-to-Kids program, the Breakfast/Snack Time with Books program, the Books & Buddies program, and the Readers in Training. Currently, the Organization's programs are being implemented, supported, and utilized throughout a continuously growing number of elementary schools throughout the Greater Las Vegas Valley, Washoe County, and Elko County, Nevada.

Position Summary

The Readers in Training Coordinator provides support to the Readers in Training program with administrative duties and recruitment of families. The RIT Coordinator works directly with the Assistant Program Manager and the Program Manager to ensure all tasks are complete in an accurate and timely manner. A successful Readers in Training Coordinator should be personable, meticulous with record keeping, and passionate about working with young children and their families.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Readers in Training Program Support

  • Monitor and respond to emails and telephone inquiries regarding program enrollment
  • Assist with electronic enrollment system
  • Help prepare and mail books monthly to enrolled families
  • Prepare playgroup materials and provide support at family playgroups
  • Assist in planning and attending playgroups in Nevada counties including Nye County and Washoe County, as needed
  • Facilitate communication between program staff and families
  • Act at point of contact on RIT mobile app upkeep
  • Send program surveys to participants and provide regular status updates
  • Assist in planning and execution of annual Readers in Training Resource Fair
  • Ensures organization's purpose is conveyed to program participants
  • Support internal and external communication regarding RIT program and/or STWN
  • Assist in preparing and attending community events
  • Monitor supply inventory and prepare/maintain supply purchasing plan
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled meetings with RIT team members
  • Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Program Assistant Manager, Program Manager, or Director of Programs related to the fundamental aspects of the RIT Coordinator position

Research Support
  • Keep abreast of new research on early childhood literacy, working with Grant Writer and RIT program team members to assist in securing future funding opportunities.
  • Regularly compile charts, grants, and anecdotal stories for internal and external constituents.
  • Provide data for monthly and yearly reporting
Administration
  • Assist Program Manager, Director of Programs, & Grant Writer with grant reports.
  • Attend other STWN events, including but not limited to taking shifts on the Book Bus, providing support at Breakfast and Snack Time with Books, and helping at school-based distributions.

Education and/or Experience Requirements
  • College degree required
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish preferred

General Requirements
  • Facilitate various tasks in conjunction with team members
  • Possess proficient ability to communicate in English in oral and written format
  • Able to adhere to a flexible work schedule, including scheduled evening and weekend events
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, TEAMS, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and encourage others
  • Must be comfortable speaking to groups of people
  • Good time-management skills
  • The ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
  • Pack, unpack, move, sort, and organize books, including small and large purchases
  • Ability to be flexible with a new and growing program
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Nevada State Drivers' License, proof of current automobile insurance and automobile registration

Physical & Mental Demands and Working Conditions: Requirements

  • Position requires travel within the local area, traveling to office and business locations to conduct business transactions. This involves exposure to weather conditions, traveling distances to and from buildings, and operating a vehicle.

  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, lift up to 25 pounds, climb/balance, stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl and push/pull file cabinet drawers.
  • Must be able to identify and assess information on computer screens and written reports and documentation and record accurate written and electronic messages and reports.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols and eye/hand coordination.
  • Ability to Comply to the Company Drug and Alcohol Policy as a requirement of a position that could adversely affect the safety of others.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to excessive heat and wet and/or humid outside conditions. Due to working in the office, warehouse, and/or school setting, the noise level in the environment is moderate to high.

This position is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.
