Job Summary:

Carnegie Corporation of New York has an exciting growth opportunity for an individual who is passionate about education reform and thrives in a creative, team-oriented, and problem-solving environment.

The Program Analyst will provide both strategic and project support to the Program Director for New Designs, who manages a portfolio focused on advancing knowledge and innovation in the field by re-imagining the student learning experience. More broadly, the Program Assistant will contribute to the Education Program’s goal of ensuring that public education serves as an engine for social and economic mobility for all learners. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is proactive, has high initiative, is creative, energetic, well organized, and able to multi-task, prioritize, learn quickly, and must have job experience within or relevant to the education sector. Exposure working in education reform and knowledge of school systems is a must.

Responsibilities:

  • Work in close partnership with the Program Director to inform and execute the portfolio’s goals and support the Education Program’s broader objectives through grantmaking and other activities. Collaboratively design and implement activities and initiatives to advance the strategy.
  • Sustain comprehensive working knowledge of, and conduct research related to, emerging knowledge, current trends, professional practices, and developing policy issues pertinent to the portfolio
  • Manage grants by monitoring progress, providing assistance, making effective use of grants management software, maintaining relationships with grantees, and working with grantees to solve problems, and staying abreast of developments within the grantee organization (e.g. change in leadership, fiscal considerations).
  • For the investigative phase of the grantmaking process, to conduct background research on prospective grantees and their capabilities, including on-site visits; to review and assess active proposals for consideration and to solicit proposal reviews from qualified scholars and experts when appropriate.
  • For the internal review phase of the grantmaking process, review, assess, and act on new proposals, actively assisting in improving their quality. Review proposed budgets, staffing, workplans, and anticipated project outcomes as related to proposal goals and institutional capability; compose and submit confidential staff evaluations of projects to the board; review and approve all relevant information corroborating the recommendation that is included in the docket.
  • Prepare supporting materials for presentations and present grant dockets at Executive Review Meeting.
  • Review and approve grantee requests for grant modification, prepare closeout reports, and ensure terms and conditions of grants are met.
  • Represent the Corporation to grantees, attend meetings, and prepare meeting summaries.
  • Monitor and manage active projects, including project management, program assessment, and administrative support as needed.
  • Draft strategic program documents, talking points, and correspondence as required.
  • Represent the Corporation on field-facing panel discussions, webinars, funder meetings and events.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • College degree required. Advanced degree preferable.
  • Strong presentation and listening skills
  • Excellent writing ability
  • Very good planning and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Willingness to travel
  • Savvy user of technology
  • Commitment to personal growth and development
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate effectively to different stakeholders
  • At least three years’ programmatic experience in philanthropy or relevant fields. Subject matter expertise and up-to-date understanding of education issues.
