Product Safety Engineer, Hardware Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate and communicate with design engineers to ensure that products are “design for safety” and will pass safety protocols.
  • Assess product prototypes for potential hazards to determine appropriate industry safety standards (functional safety, mechanical, electrical, radiation, EMC/EMI and biocompatibility standards including jurisdictional requirements).
  • Conduct safety assessments (qualitative and quantitative) on custom research hardware.
  • Validate the results of 3rd party test data for the hardware as per the requirements set by safety standards or RL EHS Technical Program Team.
  • Participate in risk analysis activities to provide mitigation techniques to engineers and researchers.
  • Assist in running and maintaining the hardware safety lab.
  • Work with product teams and 3rd party compliance agencies to carry out compliance assessments and global certifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in engineering with a minimum of 7 years of safety assessment or testing experience.
  • Knowledge of various compliance and safety standards such as IEC 62368, IEC 60950, IEC 62133, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471.
  • Hands-on experience in conducting or coordinating safety testing per IEC and UL standards.
  • Project interaction with NRTL or 3rd party testing agencies.
  • Optical or laser safety experience.
  • Knowledge and experience performing safety testing on prototype devices.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of RF devices and global regulation such as FCC, EU RD etc.
  • Good understanding of ISO 17025 lab quality system processes and how to maintain compliant safety evaluations records.
