Location: Preferred locations are Portland, OR, Freemont, CA, or Vancouver BC
This position is open for remote work throughout the US. If you are remote, travel would be heavy upfront (about 50%) but long term only about 25%.
Position Overview: As the Development Engineering Manager, you will lead the design, testing, and certification of cutting-edge electrical power products in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers. This pivotal role demands a deep understanding of engineering principles across various domains and the ability to steer the Product Development process with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee Product Development projects from conception to completion.
- Evaluate incoming development requests, conducting feasibility studies and risk assessments.
- Collaborate with Sales and stakeholders to draft comprehensive engineering specifications and concept drawings.
- Interface with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to define product evaluation and certification criteria.
- Direct the creation of detailed design drawings, 3D models, and bills of material for prototypes.
- Develop and implement test plans according to relevant standards, analyzing and revising designs based on empirical data.
- Support testing activities both in-house and at third-party facilities, with occasional travel up to 20%.
- Drive documentation and closure processes for Product Development projects.
- Characterize the performance of design elements through testing, simulation, and analytical methods.
- Ensure Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles are integrated throughout the development process.
- Conduct failure analyses of existing products and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Manage project schedules and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in designing low and/or medium voltage power distribution equipment or related products.
- BSEE, BSME, or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in three-phase electric power concepts, power distribution systems, and control/protection strategies.
- Familiarity with NRTL evaluation, testing, and certification processes.
- Knowledge of common standards for electrical equipment (e.g., UL 891, 1558, 508A; IEEE C37.20).
- Experience with 3D solid modeling and 2D CAD is advantageous.
- Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
- Strong team player with exceptional organizational abilities and attention to detail.
