Position Summary: Supervise the operations & union personnel in the Mixhouse, Cave and other associated Batching Systems & Equipment. Provide technical leadership in the Melting department in the areas of Glass Raw Materials, Batching & Melting to improve process yields, reduce non-conformities and reduce product cost. This is accomplished through data analysis, experiment plans, process capability studies & variability reduction.
Primary Responsibilities:
Monitor daily operations ensuring process stability and shift-to-shift operational consistency. Characterize and optimize daily operations.
Maintain glass on composition through documented procedures. Correlate glass quality and operational problems with process variables. Use SPC, Six Sigma and other statistical tools for data analysis and decision making.
Tour Melting, Mixing & Cave daily, including reading logbooks. Bring issues to morning meetings & work for active resolution.
Manage cullet and its conservation throughout the plant.
Support Melting production department through weekly on-call & weekend team coverage.
Manage & Control the glass process transitions, such as new products, raw materials and color.
Control analytical & cullet related spending.
Provide training, coaching, and assessment for Cave/Mixhouse operators and other Melting personnel.
Inspect process equipment and ensure problems are identified and addressed in a timely matter.
Develop work instructions and RAS sheets as required for Mixhouse, Cave and glass chemistry related tasks. Maintain and enforce the SOS system for the assigned unit.
Manage cullet inventories. Manage cullet segregation and take action to avoid & prevent contamination. Maintain metal on magnet data. Conduct cullet audits.
Support tank repairs and start-ups.
Track downtime, cullet, quality, batch consistency ensuring objectives for each area are met.
Manage raw material inventories while ensuring consistency in COA verifications.
Maintain and develop key supplier relationships, while exploring cost-reduction and process improvement projects.
Work closely with Melting, Forming, Maintenance & Quality functions as required to maximize process yield.
Required Qualifications:
4-year Ceramics, Material Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering degree preferred.
Understanding of MS Office and general computer skills.
Must be able to troubleshoot issues and solve problems.
Strong team player with an ability to be hands on when necessary.
Disciplined and structured approach to work with good attention to detail to ensure high quality standards.
Be willing to work off shifts and weekends as required to support manufacturing.
