About The Role:
As a Chemical Process Engineer, you will work with our team of talented engineers and scientists in the design and development of physical systems in supporting our indoor farms to create the ideal conditions for growing and delivering the purest produce imaginable. A successful candidate will have the ability to operate within a fast-paced, dynamic environment by leveraging their demonstrated background in designing and developing systems through strong problem-solving, project management, and internal motivation. This position will work closely between our R&D and operation teams. Bowery encourages innovation and expects our team members to take ownership in solving complex problems.

This role has a 50% travel expectation.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and coordinate the innovation, design, and implementation activities for all systems related to fluid and Chemical Processes in our grow systems.
  • Develop optimal solutions for fluid process flow, irrigation sanitation, nutrient balance for crops, grow media, equipment specification, site layout, and intellectual property considerations.
  • Develop Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFD).
  • Perform fluid dynamic and thermodynamic calculations to size pumps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, and cooling loads.
  • Calculating stoichiometric relationships in hydroponic systems.
  • Coordinate with our internal R&D teams to support and develop operation ready solutions for current and future farms.
  • Work closely with vendors and internal teams to identify performance targets, sizing calculations that are required, review and recommend equipment that can fit the need, and determine optimal geometry and equipment layout.
  • Collaboration with internal teams and external vendors to generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions in very short periods of time.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple high visibility projects and tasks while effectively influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors and vendors.
  • Create design intent sets of drawings and basis of design (BOD) narratives, gathering internal stakeholder sign off as design for current and next cohort of farms.
  • Travel to existing and future farms to assist with operations and construction/start-up activities.
  • Manage vendors and their supply of equipment for a network of farms (domestic and international)

Who You Are:

  • Experienced with engineering-related calculations and developing design documentation
  • Knowledge of piping and equipment codes, product safety standards, etc.
  • Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems including pneumatics and automated control systems would be ideal.
  • Creative problem solver that enjoys iterative prototyping and experimental design process. Ability to troubleshoot.
  • Ability to use business/technical software such as Microsoft suite (Excel, Project, Word), AutoCAD and Revit, or similar software.
  • Experienced leading and managing the approval of manufacturing drawings, an inspection of equipment, and installation leading up to commissioning
  • You possess strong interpersonal skills – seen as a natural team leader
  • You are a team player and work well with others in the face of challenges and a common mission
  • You have the ability to multitask and prioritize diverse tasks, hit hard deadlines, and know when to escalate issues that arise
  • Ability to travel 50% domestically and internationally
  • Prior experience/ exposure to food and/or beverage production is a plus.
  • Experience with disinfection oxidizers, like ozone, is a plus.
