Job Description
The Discovery Analytical Research group within Analytical Enabling Capabilities (Analytical R&D) is seeking applicants for a Principal Scientist position available at its West Point, Pennsylvania research facility. In this role, the individual will work closely with the group Director to define group strategy and lead a team of scientists in solving complex analytical problems to facilitate the discovery efforts of vaccines, small molecules and other emerging modalities. We are looking for a team player with strong leadership skills and ability and passion for mentoring and working along with others in a laboratory setting. Applicants must have effective organizational and multi-tasking skills, have demonstrated excellent scientific leadership, and have superior written and oral communications skills. A track record of delivering impactful solutions to complex problems, and evidence of strong cross-functional collaboration is expected. Experience leading small groups of technical personnel, leading projects, and defining group or departmental strategy will aid in distinguishing candidates. An established reputation for scientific excellence supported by publications and external presentations is expected.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge in the biopharmaceutical discovery and development fields, and proficiency in one or more areas such as separation techniques, spectroscopy, high resolution mass spectrometry, and lab automation. This incumbent should have knowledge in protein chemistry, structural biology, and biochemistry with applications to biomolecules such as viruses, virus like particles, proteins, and DNA/RNA.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead a team of scientists to enable discovery partner groups with advanced analytical methods.
Represent the discovery analytical research group in project teams
Solve challenging problems by application of one or more analytical technique, including but not limited to, liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
Explore and develop new technologies applicable to the field of measurement science.
Demonstrate effective multitasking, prioritization and problem-solving skills in the planning and execution of experiments.
Collaborate in a fast-paced, integrated, multidisciplinary team environment.
Education Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. in Analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
M.S. in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 12 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
B.S. in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 16 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
Required Experience and Skills:
Demonstrated ability to develop talent through good mentoring skills.
Demonstrated ability for taking initiative, creativity and innovation in problem solving.
Strong background and extensive hands-on experience with chromatography and electrophoresis separation techniques (HPLC, UPLC, CE) and hyphenated techniques (LC-MS).
Expertise in analytical characterization of vaccines (viruses, virus like particles, proteins, and DNA/RNA).
Experience with analysis of biological molecules.
Demonstrated scientific ability through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations in scientific conferences.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, creativity, and strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to deliver complex objectives under challenging timelines in a rapidly changing environment.
Ability to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Experience with Immuno-Assays.
Experience with nucleic acids characterization, protein characterization, and protein interactions.
Solid computer skills, experience with automated laboratory instrumentation, and independent analytical problem-solving capabilities.
Familiarity with electronic laboratory notebook applications and good documentation practices.
