Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY


The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Population Management Center (PMC) at Lincoln Park Zoo is a specialized team of scientists advising the cooperatively managed AZA Animal Programs (Species Survival Plans® (SSPs), SAFE Programs, AZA Studbooks), with an ultimate goal of improving the viability of zoo and aquarium animal populations. The PMC Program Assistant provides administrative support and assistance to staff by serving as the quality control reviewer for reports published by the center. The PA is responsible for reviewing and distributing reports, editing and maintaining databases used by the AZA community, as well as communicating with and providing support for colleagues at AZA zoos and aquariums.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Review, edit, and distribute draft and final Breeding and Transfer Plan reports, including archiving reports, managing file organization, and maintaining databases with current report data
  • Maintain AZA Survival Statistics Database and post on AZA website quarterly
  • Enter data into PMCTrack software during the planning process and summarize these data, as needed
  • Analyze/Utilize data from database to assist with annual reports, research goals, and presentations
  • Assist with training of PMC interns, volunteers, or new staff, as needed
  • Participate in the Lincoln Park Zoo Conservation and Science Department’s team approach to ongoing population biology research and/or data management projects other aspects of cooperative Animal Programs if applicable
  • Participate in the AZA Small Population Management Advisory Group and other associated advisory groups as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of the AZA PMC at Lincoln Park Zoo
  • Complete work via a blend of remote working from home and in-person working in the office


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES


    • Bachelor’s Degree in biology or closely related scientific discipline is preferred or equivalent administrative experience
  • Successful candidates must have strong computer, organizational, and professional communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Experience maintaining databases with accuracy and a high attention to detail
  • Ability to organize tasks and prioritize to ensure timely completion of all projects
  • Experience editing and reviewing documents for accuracy and quality control preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, OneDrive, SharePoint, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency with conducting virtual meetings for customer service, team calls, and using various virtual meeting software
  • Ability to learn new software quickly and proactively approach problem solving
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a group
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with fellow employees, colleagues at other facilities, and zoo visitors
  • Ability to professionally represent the AZA PMC at external meetings
  • Experience with zoo and aquarium based Population Management Animal Programs and software (e.g., PopLink, ZIMS for Studbooks, PMx, PMCTrack), preferred but not required


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Ability to work at a desk/computer for seven hours per day.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to conferences on behalf of the AZA PMC.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Must be available to work up to two weekends per year, to participate in conferences.
  • Availability to work one Lincoln Park Zoo special event that may occur outside of regular work schedule, including evening, weekend or holiday, as required
  • Provide proof of COVID 19 vaccine


Salary Range


$40,000-44,000
