- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Social Science, Landscape Architecture, or a planning related field, plus five (5) years of planning related work.
- Twelve (12) semester hours of relevant graduate college course work may substitute for six (6) months of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.
- Experience in planning-related work may substitute for education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

- Serve as one of three leads Local Area Planners. Responsibilities include the study, use, and operation of transportation systems, assisting in transportation projects and activities, collaborating and developing strategic relationships with community organizations and non-profits, and reviewing the work of junior Transportation Planners and the work performed by less experienced Transportation Planners.
- Administer updates and the implementation of the City’s Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP). Coordinate with other departments and divisions to monitor the implementation of the ASMP including making recommendations to ensure future projects align with the ASMP.
- Analyze information related to transportation, such as land use policies, environmental impacts of projects, or long-range planning needs. Assist in reviewing documents and coordinating the City’s response to stakeholders and the community related to large and/or complex development and redevelopment projects.
- Respond to and monitor ASMP inbox.
- Collaborate with Engineers to research, analyze, or resolve complex transportation design issues.
- Generate and interpret data from traffic modeling software, geographic information systems, or associated databases.
- Prepare reports and make presentations on transportation planning activities.
- Support planning efforts through educational outreach to the public and collaboration across City departments. Provide technical support to boards, commissions, and committees.
- Investigate community/public complaints to determine validity. Speak as City representative before public groups. Respond directly to community member requests and questions on planning processes.
- Analyze processes and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- May assist other team members within the division and department on projects and programs as needed.
