Minimum Qualifications
Planner II:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Social Science, Landscape Architecture, or a planning related field, plus two(2) years of experience in planning related work.


  • Twelve (12) semester hours of relevant graduate college course work may substitute for six months of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.

  • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
None
Planner III:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Planning, Geography, Social Science, Landscape Architecture, or a planning related field, plus three (3) years of experience in planning related work.

  • Twelve (12) semester hours of relevant graduate college course work may substitute for six (6) months of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.

The Planning Department is seeking a Planner II, Planner III, or Planner Senior to help further the mission and goals of the department. The mission of the Planning Department is to provide equitable and people-centered planning services to shape an Austin where everyone can thrive.

Planner II: $27.16 – $32.87
Planner III: $28.85 – $36.06
Planner Senior: $31.81 – $39.76
  • Work as part of a team; conduct background research and analysis; perform real estate market and economic research, analysis, and modeling including density bonus calibration.
  • Develop schematic-level urban design, site design, and development visualizations; conduct quantitative, spatial, and qualitative analyses; draft code language by working with other departments.
  • Create and give presentations to boards and commissions and community and professional organizations; and other planning activities as needed to support ongoing updates to Austin’s Land Development Code.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and proficiency with architectural/site visualization and modeling, and concept-level site design using various tools including SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, or similar tools.
  • Experience and proficiency with data analysis, interpretation, and visualization, through various tools including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft Office Suite (PPT, SharePoint, Word, Excel), Power BI, Adobe Acrobat Pro (InDesign, Illustrator), or other tools.
  • Experience writing, interpreting, or applying land development codes or technical codes and synthesizing and explaining technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience managing, organizing, and scheduling multiple tasks on tight timelines.
