The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
This position is for senior level MECHANICAL ENGINEER in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, modernization, and inactivation of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. The candidate will perform and lead others in pipe analysis efforts supporting the resolution of shipboard deficiencies and planned improvements. Shipboard visits may be necessary for problem resolution involving access to radiological areas.

Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Experience with Class 2 pipe stress analyses in accordance with Navy standards, or AME B31.1, including evaluations for weight, pressure and thermal flexibility.
Experience with the performance of Simplified Class I fatigue analyses performed in accordance with PDB-46 or its commercial equivalent.
A working understanding of reactor plant systems and governing design documents is required. Experience with the design and selection of shipboard piping supports, and the evaluation of piping and supports for shock loading.
Experience with the resolution of piping deficiencies and deviations, and the evaluation of the acceptability of temporary lead shielding installations is desired.
Proficiency in reviewing engineering drawings, understanding piping and mechanical systems, and working to established specifications and standards. Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others is highly desired.
Excellent communication, and organizational skills as well as experience and proficiency with formal written technical communication.
Proficiency in the use of Triflex, or similar pipe analysis software.
Experience with use of PIPE IV legacy software is highly desirable.
