United Community Centers (UCC) is a social justice driven community center that has been serving the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn for over 60 years. Our mission is to work together with residents of all ages and cultures to address our community’s challenges, celebrate its strengths, and provide services that improve lives. East New York Farms (ENYF) is a project of the United Community Centers, Inc (UCC).
ENYF! is a diverse group of gardeners, vendors, farmers and youth working together to strengthen our community through gardens, fresh food, and farmers markets. The Pink Houses Community Farm, a collaboration between NYCHA Pink Houses residents and staff, aims to increase the availability of healthy food and build stronger relationships in the community. All of the produce grown at the farm will be given away to Pink Houses residents, free of charge. We are looking for a Farm Manager to oversee all aspects of the new farm. The Farm Manager will also be responsible for community engagement. We are looking for a committed and reliable individual who is willing to learn and take on full responsibility for the farm.
We will prioritize individuals that identify as BIPOC, able to work onsite/in-person, identify with the community, and are residents of NYCHA.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of crop production at the Pink Houses Community Farm, including soil management and field preparation, greenhouse seeding and seedling management, transplanting, direct seeding, weeding, irrigation, harvesting and post-harvest handling of produce.
- Improve upon and implement fertility, weed, pest and disease management plans.
- Consults with NYCHA residents and Green Committee to finalize seasonal farm plans and build resident engagement.
- Managing the weekly distribution of produce to the community and local partners.
- Lead staff, interns, volunteer groups, and fellows in all relevant aspects of crop production and farm maintenance.
- Oversee the seasonal work plan as well as weekly and daily “to do” lists.
- Administration, data collection and record-keeping for the farm, such as crop records, tool inventory, etc.
- Oversee maintenance of farm implements, infrastructure, tools, and supplies.
- Work with ENYF Project Director to budget and schedule repairs, replacements, and upgrades.
- Train and supervise a crew of youth interns assigned to support agricultural space.
- Point person in coordinating and managing the ENYF Seed Saving Project along with ENY Agricultural team.
- Participate in monthly meetings led by NYCHA to partner with NYCHA staff, resident committee, and citywide organizations to support the farm and expand its reach.
- Act as an ambassador for ENYF, such as conducting outreach within the community, leading tours to visitors, and agricultural workshops
Qualifications
- At least one season of experience managing a garden or farm.
- Comfortable working outside in all weather.
- Capable of lifting 40 pounds.
- Able to work independently and initiate projects.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing crop plans.
- Familiar and proficient with G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, Gmail) and computer applications.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds).
Desired Qualities
- Familiarity with East New York.
- Interest in community work, youth development, adult education, and food justice.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Spanish or Bangla is helpful but not required
