The Winter/Spring photo and video intern will work closely with industry professionals in our innovative digital newsroom in San Francisco and will be tasked with capturing photo and video of breaking news events and for feature assignments. Interns will contribute to daily operations by closely collaborating with reporters, producers and editors in the newsroom and in the field.
Interns must work on-site or in the field in San Francisco five days per week and have their own transportation for assignments in the city and the wider Bay Area. Lastly, Interns will be provided with company photo, video, lighting and computer equipment.
The internship begins no later than Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, and will continue for 12 weeks, concluding on Friday, April 26, 2023. We will consider applicants willing to work full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week). Compensation is $25/hour. This role may require occasional weekend or evening work.
Ideal candidates will have both photo and video skills (drone certification a plus) and should have experience working in a newsroom, as a freelancer or within a professional media environment. Experience in creating content for social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok a plus.
You should possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with WordPress, Canva and/or photo wire service platforms is a plus.

How to apply
Required materials:
- Your resume. Link to or attach a photography or multimedia portfolio that showcases a variety of subjects within a documentary and/or photojournalism style including portraits, features and breaking news. The work does not have to be published.
- A cover letter explaining why you are interested in the internship and how your portfolio reflects your technical or photojournalistic skills. In the letter, pitch two ideas for a photo essay or multimedia project you'd be interested in pursuing as a photographerno subject matter is off limits, as long as it's local to SF. Your pitches should explain why the story is relevant and interesting to readers, and how you'd approach it.
- Have two references fill out a reference form. (The references can be professors, teachers, mentors, etc.)
- Candidates who seem like good matches will be screened by the photo editor and senior newsroom leadership.
