Responsibilities:
- Serves the Laboratory and the Hospital by providing Laboratory testing personnel with quality blood specimens from patients for use in diagnostic test procedures which aid patient management and treatment.
- Maintains logs, records and tracking of specimens and order requests in the Laboratory Information System
- Performs venous and capillary blood collection procedures on inpatients, outpatients and nursing home patients.
- Labels and distributes specimens to the appropriate areas of the Laboratory.
- Maintains current logs, records, inquiries, pending lists as appropriate to the needs of the Laboratory.
- Transports specimens throughout the building complex.
- Maintains expendable supplies for phlebotomy in the vicinity of their use.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide Laboratory services appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Extremely high degree of accuracy and responsibility required in the performance of this job.
Education:
An Academic High School Diploma or equivalent.
Formal phlebotomy training in an academic setting or medical assistant training preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Possess the skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient identification and preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens; implementing all standard Laboratory policies and procedures that apply to the performance of the job; effective written and oral communication; effective organizational and time management skills. Possess a working knowledge of factors that influence test results, e.g., anticoagulants, preservatives, interfering substances (IV fluids), collection times.
