Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

Responsibilities

The Electricity Infrastructure Group is looking for a university intern to work with a team of senior engineers to create high-impact solutions for electric power grids. The intern will come up with creative new solutions to real-world cross-domain data analytics. The intern will take initiative to identify opportunities to contribute, communicate their questions and results, find solutions to ambiguously defined problems, create reusable software tools, and write research papers during the internship.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have solid experience in running phasor and EMT domain simulation in commercially available and open-source software tools

  • Have strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or other languages

  • Have experience with the EMT simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC

  • Have experience with the positive-sequence phasor transient stability simulation tools such as PSS/E and PSLF

  • Experience with power system protection and inverter protection modeling is preferred

  • Experience with open-source simulation tools such as GridLAB-D and GridPACK is preferred

  • Experience with the HELICS co-simulation framework is preferred

  • Experience with both bulk power system and distribution feeder models is preferred

  • Experience with modeling and simulation of inverter-based microgrids is preferred

  • Industry experience is a plus

HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
