Pharmacist

Overall Responsibility

The purpose of this position is to aid in managing and overseeing the pharmacy's operations. The Pharmacist is responsible for providing leadership and ensuring compliance with the practice of veterinary medicine and the hospital standards of care by department team members. The Pharmacist will oversee quality control and verification of medications before their release to patients. The Pharmacist is also responsible for creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine is delivered.

In partnership and collaboration with the Medical Director, Pharmacy Department Head, and the assistance of the Director of Nursing and Nursing Supervisors, the Pharmacist will work to plan, lead, and coordinate positive change as it relates to pharmacy activities and oversee the department's standards of care. The Pharmacist will play a role in helping fulfill the MLAH mission and vision and assist in creating direction for the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Review prescriptions to assure accuracy.
  • Coach and train pharmacy employees.
  • Provide information to patients about medications and their use.
  • Assess the identity, strength, or purity of medications.
  • Recruit and hire quality candidates for open positions within the pharmacy and ensure a smooth onboarding and training period to ensure new hire retention.
  • Responsible for tracking time/attendance and coordinating ETO approvals with the Department Head.
  • Work alongside employees and assist with hands-on training where possible.
  • Provide input on employee performance and merit-based increases and bonuses.
  • Assist with developing onboarding objectives and participate in the onboarding process concerning pharmacy practice.
  • Assist in formulating objectives and policies to ensure efficient departmental operations.
  • Assess the skill sets of technicians and potential candidates–their deficits, strengths, fit for a particular department, etc.
  • Help develop goals and training objectives.
  • Coordinate departmental meetings with the respective Department Head and Lead(s).
  • Attends all department meetings either in person or virtually as required.
  • Disseminate relevant information to additional staff and doctors as indicated.
  • Foster communication and collaboration between departments.
  • Implement protocols and best practices.
  • Oversee the facility's and equipment's cleanliness, safety, and maintenance issues and summarize findings and suggestions to the appropriate manager.
  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies, and appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Provide accurate drug information to prescribing professionals and counseling clients for all prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Staff Management: Professional and Support Staff

  • Mentor and work with pharmacy staff to ensure cooperation and mutual respect.
  • Assist staff where necessary and foster an educational environment.
  • Collaborate with HR and Managers to select qualified staff for the department (i.e., working interviews). Perform interviews for the pharmacy.
  • Proactively identify solutions to overcome unexpected volume, delays, staffing shortages, etc.
  • Coach pharmacy leads regarding expectations and performance and leads by example.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department Head to assist with disciplinary and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).
  • Expected to help enforce hospital policies while on the floor and act as an example for the rest of the staff, regardless of department.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy
  • Licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of NJ.
  • Strong patient service skills.
  • May be required to work additional hours beyond the regular clinical work schedule to accomplish the position's duties.
  • Occasional weekends and holidays required.

Physical Requirements

  • This job requires frequent standing, bending, or sitting for long periods of time.
